Gophers Sweep Northwestern in Road Action

The No. 5 University of Minnesota volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over Northwestern, tonight, in Evanston, Ill. With the win, the Golden Gophers are 5-0 in the Big Ten and 11-2 overall. Northwestern drops to 10-7 overall and 0-5 in league action.
 
Minnesota was led by Taylor Morgan who had 11 kills and hit .562 in the win. She was followed by Regan Pittman with eight (hit .500) and Stephanie Samedy with seven (hit .417). Samantha Seliger-Swenson had 30 assists, three aces and six digs. CC McGraw had nine digs and three aces. As a team, the Gophers delivered a season-best nine aces. The Gophers hit .390 as a team to Northwestern's .117. They also had a 40-26 dig advantage and a 7-4 block lead.
 
Minnesota is on the road for the third-straight match as it takes on No. 3 Nebraska, Saturday night, at 7 p.m.
 
Set 1: Minnesota hit .500 in the opening set as Pittman and Rollins each had four kills en route to a 25-19 set win. Tied at 5-5, Minnesota went on a 4-0 run as Northwestern called a timeout. Minnesota, however, added to its lead and took a 12-6 lead off a Samedy ace, her fourth of the year. The Gophers poured on the pressure and took a 16-8 lead off a Seliger-Swenson/Morgan block as Northwestern called its second timeout of the set. Minnesota pushed the lead to 10 when Hart added a kill from Pittman. Northwestern later went on a 5-1 run to cut the Gophers' lead to 21-17, however, Minnesota finished off the set with back-to-back kills from Hart for the 24 and 25th point and a 1-0 lead.
 
Set 2: The Gophers earned a 25-17 second set win. Minnesota opened the second set on a 7-2 run as Northwestern called a timeout. The Wildcats responded and cut the Gopher lead to one at 9-8. The Gophers, however, took a 12-9 lead off a Seliger-Swenson ace. Minnesota built a four-point lead at 15-11 off a Morgan kill as Northwestern burned its second timeout. The Gophers later went on a 5-0 run and a 20-13 lead off a Wildcat attack error. Minnesota went up 23-16 off a Pittman kill. The Gophers went up 2-0 when Pittman set up Seliger-Swenson for a kill.
 
Set 3: Minnesota hit .423 in the third for a 25-15 set win. A kill by Rollins put the Gophers up, 7-3, and forced Northwestern to call its first timeout of the set. The Gophers, however, continued the pressure and went up 10-3, off a Mcgraw ace. After Sara Nielsen subbed in the back row, she delivered an ace as Northwestern called a timeout as Minnesota led, 12-4. A Samedy/Morgan block put the Gophers up 16-9, while Morgan provided a kill at 20-12. McGraw delivered her third ace of the night at 22-13, while a Samedy kill pushed it to match point. Pittman added her eighth kill of the night as the Gophers won, 3-0.
