Max McHugh took home Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors for the third time this season after a record-setting performance at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in West Lafayette, Ind. over the weekend.
McHugh's biggest achievement of the meet came on the first day in the 200-yard breaststroke. His 1:54.20 marks the fastest time in the nation this year and won the event. McHugh also took second in the 100-yard breaststroke on Sunday, placing only behind Indiana's Ian Finnerty, last year's NCAA champion in the event. He clocked a 52.19 in the event, which is the third-fastest time this year.
McHugh also participated in the 400-medley relay and placed third on Saturday, and his 200-medley team featuring Indiana's Gabriel Fantoni, Vini Lanza and Zach Apple took first with a time of 1:24.26.
McHugh also earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week awards in consecutive weeks on Oct. 17 and 24 after winning two breaststroke events at Wisconsin and four events at Florida State, respectively. He was the first Minnesota rookie to win the award since Michael Messner in November of 2015.
McHugh and the Gophers visit the Hawkeyes for the Iowa Invitational this week, with action beginning on Thursday.
