Gophers Clinch Share of Big Ten Title With Win Over Maryland

The No. 3 University of Minnesota volleyball program clinched at least a share of the Big Ten title with a 3-1 win over Maryland, tonight in College Park, Md. After dropping the first set, 17-25, the Golden Gophers (23-2 overall, 17-0 in the Big Ten), rebounded to win the next three, 25-19, 25-23, 25-20
The Gophers came away with the win despite being outhit .242 to .209. Minnesota held a 56-55 kill lead, while both teams tied in digs (67). Maryland held an 11-6 lead in blocks.Â
The Gophers were led by Adanna Rollins who had 19 kills, followed by Stephanie Samedy with 16 (hit .361). Minnesota had five individuals with double-digit digs. Samedy and Rollins collected double-doubles when they also had 12 and 10 digs, respectively. CC McGraw had a team-best 18 digs, while Samantha Seliger-Swenson and Lauren Barnes also contributed 11. Seliger-Swenson also had a double-double when she posted 48 assists. Barnes led the team with three aces.Rollins also led the team with four blocks.Â
Minnesota plays Ohio State, tomorrow night to close out the weekend road stand. The match is set for 6 p.m. CT and streamed on BTN Plus.Â
Set Breakdown:Â
Set 1: Maryland hit .414 to Minnesota's .133 to take a 25-17 first set win. The Gophers called timeouts as the Terrapins took 15-9 and 18-10 leads. Maryland got a kill for a 20-12 advantage. Rollins added a kill for Minnesota's 15th and 16th points, but the Terps closed out the set with a kill and a 1-0 lead. Rollins added six of Minnesota's nine kills of the set.
Set 2: The Gophers utilized a 7-0 run in the middle of the set to take a 25-19 win. Minnesota took its first timeout of the set as Maryland built an 8-4 early lead. Trailing 8-14, Minnesota went on a 7-0 run, six of which were on Samedy's serve rotation. Minnesota tied the set at 14-14 and took a 15-14 lead on a Rollins/Pittman block. Samedy later had back-to-back kills to give Minnesota a 22-19 lead as the Terps called a timeout. The Gophers, however, closed out the set with a block from Pittman and Samedy, a kill by Samedy and a Maryland attack error to tie the match, 1-1. Â
Set 3: The Gophers took the third set, 25-23. Pittman put the Gophers up, 7-3 on a kill, while Pittman assisted a Hart kill for a 10-5 lead. Minnesota went up, 15-10, as Maryland called a timeout. The Terrapins responded out of the break and rattled off five straight to tie the set as Minnesota called a timeout. The two teams traded points through 17-17 before the Gophers took a 20-17 lead off a Samedy kill, which forced Maryland to call a timeout. They again came out of its timeout and tied the set, 20-20. Down 21-20, Minnesota called a timeout and went up, 22-21 off Samedy and Rollins kills. The Gophers later took a 23-21 lead during a Barnes ace. As Maryland pulled within one, Samedy added a kill for the 2-1 lead.

Minnesota went on a run and tied the set at 6-6 and took a 7-6 lead off a Rollins ace. The Gophers held a narrow 10-8 lead as Maryland came back to tie the set. The Gophers, however, went on a 7-1 run and took the lead for good. Barnes added two aces, while Minnesota had three kills in that span. Pittman tipped the ball for a 20-15 lead. A block from Samedy and Morgan pushed Minnesota to a 23-17 lead. Maryland pushed back and cut Minnesota's lead to four at 24-20, but Samedy added her 16th kill of the night for a 3-1 win.    Â
