Homestand Continues Against Golden Lions

11/19/2018 2:26:00 PM | Women's Basketball

MINNEAPOLIS -- No. 23 Minnesota (3-0) continues its six-game homestand Tuesday night against Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-2) at 7 p.m. It's the second game of the team's longest stretch of games at home since also playing six in a row at The Barn during December of the 2013-14 season.

Tuesday's game will be available to stream on BTN Plus and can be heard on the Gophers' new radio home this season, 96.7 FM KFAN Plus.

THE OPENING TIP-OFF
 • After holding New Hampshire to just 47 points in the season opener, Xavier to 53 Wednesday and San Diego to 48 Saturday, Minnesota has allowed 148 points so far this year. That's the lowest point total allowed in the first three games of the season for the Gophers since the 1975-76 season when they held Mankato State (44) and Lakehead (49 and 51) to a combined 144 points.
•  Sitting 3-0 on the season, Minnesota enters Tuesday night's game ranked No. 23 in the AP Poll. After coming in at No. 25 last week, this is the first time the Gophers have been ranked in consecutive weeks since Jan. 12 (23) and Jan 19, 2015 (21). It's just the fifth time overall they've appeared in the AP Poll since the 2005-06 season. The Gophers are 3-2 all-time as the No. 23 team.
•  According to women's basketball writer Mel Greenberg, Minnesota head coach Lindsay Whalen is the 39th person in women's basketball history to be ranked as both a player and a coach and the 12th to do it at the same school. The Golden Gophers were ranked for the last eight weeks of Whalen's sophomore season as well her entire junior and senior years.
• The Golden Gophers are looking to start 4-0 for the fourth straight season and fifth time in the last six years. A win Saturday would also make Whalen the third coach in Gophers' history to win her first four games, joining Pam Borton and Marlene Stollings. The record for most wins to start a Gophers coaching career belongs to Borton, who won her first 12 games during the 2002-03 season, Whalen's junior season.

• Minnesota opened the 2018-19 season with a 70-47 win over New Hampshire on Nov. 9. The announced sellout crowd of 14,625 was a program record, surpassing the previous high of 14,363 set during Whalen's senior season in 2004. Four of the top five marks in team history, and eight of the top 10, have now occurred with Whalen as either a player or coach.

SERIES WITH ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF
• Minnesota and Arkansas-Pine Bluff will meet for the first time on Tuesday.

• In its history, Minnesota is 5-2 against teams from the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), with the average score being 76-57 in the Gophers' favor.

RECAPPING THE WIN AGAINST SAN DIEGO
•  Trailing by seven through three quarters, Minnesota outscored San Diego, 24-12, in the final stanza to come away with a 53-48 victory.

Taiye Bello notched her third double-double in as many games with 13 points and a career-high 18 rebounds. She did most of her damage in the pivotal fourth quarter, tallying eight points and 11 rebounds in the final frame.

•  Kenisha Bell scored a game-high 21 points, with 14 of them coming in the second half. She also had a season-high seven rebounds and three steals.

• When San Diego pulled ahead 15-13 in the second quarter, it was the first time Minnesota had trailed all season, ending Minnesota's run at 93:09 with the lead.

GOPHERS SCORING DEFENSE STRONG TO START SEASON
• Minnesota's scoring defense has been stellar so far this season and is a big reason the team is 3-0.

• The 148 points allowed by Minnesota through the first three games of the season is the lowest opponent point total since 1975-76 and the third lowest in team annals.

• The Gophers have held opponents to less than 60 points in three straight games for the first time since December of the 2013-14 season.

• The Golden Gophers rank 23rd in the country in scoring defense by allowing just 49.3 points per game. Conversely, last season Minnesota finished the year ranked 335th by allowing 74.8 points per game.

BELLO RACKING UP THE DOUBLE-DOUBLES
• Junior Taiye Bello has posted double-doubles in all three games this season. She is the first Minnesota player to have three straight double-doubles since Amanda Zahui B. ended the 2014-15 season with four in a row. Bello now has seven in her career, with Minnesota going 7-0 in those games.

• Bello scored 10 points in the first half in the season opener and finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

• She followed that up with 11 points and 16 rebounds at Xavier. Not only did she tie a then-career high for rebounds, she also had her double-double by halftime with 10 points and 13 rebounds in the first 20 minutes.

• Against San Diego, she had 13 points and a career-high 18 rebounds, which were the most by a Gopher since Zahui B. had 22 against Depaul in the NCAA Tournament on March 20, 2015.

• Through Sunday's games, she was leading the country in rebounds per game (16.0) and offensive rebounds per game (7.0). She was also leading the Big Ten with three double-doubles (fifth nationally) and 9.0 defensive rebounds per game (15th).
