Gophers Close Out Big Ten Season With a Sweep

The No. 3 University of Minnesota volleyball team finished the regular season with a 3-0 win over Rutgers, tonight in New Brunswick, N.J. The Golden Gophers won, 25-13, 25-14, 25-20, as they improved to 25-3 overall and 19-1 in the Big Ten.
Minnesota was led by Adanna Rollins, who had 11 kills and hit .360, followed by Taylor Morgan with 10 kills and hit .600. Pittman added eight and hit .533. Samantha Seliger-Swenson added 35 assists, three aces, four digs and four blocks. Stephanie Samedy led the Gophers with nine kills, followed by Lauren Barnes with eight.
As a team, Minnesota hit .395, had 39 kills, nine blocks and 34 digs. Rutgers hit .147, had 35 kills, 31 digs and two blocks.
Minnesota, the Big Ten champion, received a NCAA automatic bid for the post season tournament. ESPNU hosts the NCAA selection show at 7:30 p.m., and will announce the field of 64. The Gophers will learn of their match up then as NCAA First and Second Rounds begin next weekend.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: The Gophers opened the match on a 12-0 run, 11 of which came on Samedy's serve rotation to take the first set, 25-13. Minnesota hit .462 in the opening set to Rutgers' .056. A Samedy ace caused Rutgers to use its first timeout at 8-2. The Gophers held a 15-2 lead before the Scarlet Knights got a side out. Minnesota pushed the score to 17-5 on a Hart kill, while Morgan added a kill for a 20-9 lead. Samedy added her second ace of the set to put the Gophers up, 22-10, while Pittman delivered a solo block for a 23-10 lead. Pittman later closed the set with a kill for a 1-0 match lead.
Set 2: Minnesota maintained the lead from the get-go and won the second, 25-14. Seliger-Swenson opened the second set with back-to-back aces and a 3-0 lead. Pittman later put the Gophers up, 7-4 on a kill, while three-straight errors gave Minnesota a 10-4 advantage as Rutgers called a timeout. Pittman later pushed the score to 12-6 with a kill, while Sara Nielsen added an ace for a 14-8 advantage. A Morgan/Seliger-Swenson block put Minnesota up, 17-8. A Rollins kill put Minnesota up, 22-11. Rutgers committed a service and attack error as the Gophers closed out the set and took a 2-0 lead.
