Gopher Spotlight: Stephanie Samedy

11/7/2018 7:40:00 AM | Volleyball

Stephanie Samedy had an extremely successful rookie season after becoming Minnesota's first ever freshman to garner First Team All-America honors. Although accomplishing so much in her first season, Samedy puts herself in a position to be able to keep improving and growing as a player. The sophomore leads the Gophers with 247 kills and has been a key player in Minnesota's performance on the court so far this season.

After having such a successful freshman campaign last season, how are you able to keep learning and improving?
I would say that the environment we are in at practice is really pushing for us to learn and grow as players. It keeps challenging us to learn and grow in different ways and try to improve our game, so that has been the easiest aspect of it. Our environment and culture is to keep learning.

Outside of volleyball, how has your sophomore year been treating you?
It has been pretty good. School is challenging, but still exciting and fun to learn new things.  I also have the teammates to hang out with and build that dynamic with.

Any idea in what you want to major in?
I think I've decided to major in psychology.

What are some of your hobbies off the court?
It would probably be cooking. I tend to cook at home, and then the second is probably sleeping.

Being from Florida, has your family been able to come up for a lot of games?
Yes they have. They did last season and then this season my dad came when we played at Target Center the beginning part of the year. My mom has also been here. They've been up here periodically.

Do you have any hidden talents?
The only thing that I can think of is that I hit and play sports right handed, but I am actually left handed. I write, brush my teeth and eat with my left hand.

What is your first volleyball memory?
It would be in middle school, in sixth or seventh grade. I feel like I was super dorky and not very coordinated.

How do you think the team is responding to such a loaded Big Ten conference this season?
I think we have responded well to the challenge. The fact that we take it game-to-game and point-to-point, and just focus on the task at hand while not letting it get too big.

What is your favorite part about going to the University of Minnesota?
It is very different from where I came from, which is what I wanted. I wanted something new to experience. The culture and people here are super friendly and inclusive.
