Pitino Blog: Omaha Recap

11/9/2018 10:34:00 AM | Men's Basketball

Good morning Gopher fans,

After a few days on the road recruiting I felt like it was a good time to take a step back and review our Omaha game.  There is no better feeling than being back in the Barn.  The new court looks awesome!  Our administration is doing a really good job of preserving the charm of the Barn, while making subtle improvements to the game day experience.  Utah is coming into town Monday night and we need a big crowd!  I scheduled this game solely for the fans.  I hope our guys take advantage of a great opportunity.

Below I will break down our game into the four categories that we always use during our post game film session and review.  Certainly a lot of really good things to highlight as well as plenty of room for growth.  Thanks to all the fans who came out to watch us play.  I appreciate everyone single person that spends their hard earned time and money to watch us play.  Let's get the Barn rocking again this season.

Offense:  B+

Obviously 104 points is something to be excited about.  28 assists is awesome but 18 turnovers is way too much.  I do think we have the potential to be a very good offensive team.  Our flow has to improve though.  We get a little bit stuck at times and need to be able to keep moving the ball and trusting that something will come instead of going one-on-one.  We continue to do a much improved job of sprinting the court on makes and misses.  We chart "sprint opportunities" throughout the course of the game and the guys executed 76% of the time.  Still room to get better in that category.  20 missed screens is too much.  The better you screen the more you will get open.  Shot selection was solid as we were only 3 for 8 on challenged shots.  We got out on the break 30 times for 32 points but only converted 16 of those 30 opportunities.

Defense: C-

I still don't love where we are at defensively.  We are very poor 1-on-1 defenders.  Too often guys would stare us down and shoot jump shots.  We have to do a better job of taking away the attempt.  We weren't disruptive enough with only 21 deflections.  You don't have to full court press to get deflections.  Our goal is to get 35-plus per game.  We did a very good job of keeping them out of the break.  We keyed in on stopping Jackson and Hahn.  Our goal is always to limit their best players scoring opportunities.  We failed in both instances as Jackson had 21 and Hahn had 14.  We also allowed the ball into the post 16 times.  That's too much as well.  Fixing these issues will be a major point of emphasis as we prepare for a very good offensive team in Utah.

Rebounding: B

We won the rebounding battle 41 to 21 which is good.  Only allowed six offensive rebounds and we had 12 ourselves.  21 second chance points is great.  Gabe Kalscheur changed the game on a free throw rebound when he got in there and tipped it out.  It was an important momentum shift.  Those little things matter!  We went to the offensive glass 72% of the time.  That's not good enough.  We have to have the mentality that every shot is a miss.  We need those extra possessions and opportunities.  Our blockouts have improved but there is definitely still room to grow.  We did a very poor job of rotating over when Daniel tried to block shots.

95%: B

Again, 95% is all the little things we do that has nothing to do with the basketball.  A player only has the ball in his hands 5% of the time during a game.  What does he do the other 95% is what truly matters.  These are the important intangibles that we believe factor into winning.  Our bench was very active and enthusiastic.  We constantly talk about celebrating others success.  We need to fuel each other emotionally.  We go back and watch every time a guy subs out.  Do they jog off the court and give five to everyone on the bench?  I always tell our players to film a commercial on themselves.  People are constantly watching for positive body language.  These things translate!  There is no better program in the country at the 95% than Villanova.  After every win we put together a picture slideshow of images from the game of our guys celebrating and showing togetherness.  We put it on a constant loop on all of the TVs throughout the practice facility.  These guys have to love winning!

Personnel:
(The NCAA has come out with a new stat sheet program that has added plus/minus on it during the game.  This has been really helpful for me throughout the course of the game.  It isn't a flawless metric, by any means, but is still informative.)

Jordan Murphy - It wasn't Jordan's best performance but he still did what he does which is get a double-double.  He's amazingly consistent with that.  Four turnovers was an issue.  He has to understand he is going to see a lot of double teams this year.  Still has to work to get deeper post touches.  Five blow-bys on defense is way too much.  He had a monster practice yesterday.  Unstoppable when he catches the ball at the right spots.

Daniel Oturu - Good first performance for Daniel.  Had a few early jitters that caused some miscues offensively.  With Eric down we can't have him in foul trouble.  He has to be smarter.  Tries to block too many shots.  Has to pick his spots better.  Love the way he attacked the offensive glass.  He's very hard to stop down low.  Five missed screens and five missed sprint opportunities.

Dupree McBrayer - It's great to see a healthy Dupree out there.  He was terrific.  Extremely efficient offensively – 5 for 6 from 3.  He can get going when he takes great shots.  We were plus-29 when he was in the game.

Amir Coffey - Much like Dupree, Amir was extremely efficient.  We were plus-31 when he was on the court.  Underrated, really good defender.  Didn't have one blow-by the whole game.  8 for 8 from the foul line is terrific.

Gabe Kalscheur - I wish I had a dollar for every time someone said to me how much they loved Gabe's demeanor on the court.  Was 12 for 12 on sprinting the court opportunities.  He is so efficient with all the little things.  Has to find a way to defend with physicality without fouling.

Isaiah Washington - 0 for 3 with challenged shots was the only real negative.  Tends to get a little casual out there with his jumper and when he is dribbling.  Other than that, I thought Isaiah was terrific.  Came to me before the season and asked what he needed to do to start.  I told him to play compete and play harder, especially on the defensive end.  He's starting to force me to make tough decisions.  I'm proud of his growth.

Brock Stull - Still getting the grasp of the system offensively and defensively but is definitely progressing positively.  Love how hard he is working in practice.  Terrific passer and can shoot it when open.  Underrated very tough.  Plays the right way.  Love the direction Brock is headed.

Jarvis Omersa - Gopher fans got a glimpse of the highlight reel that Jarvis can be at times.  He is so much fun to watch.  Has to look to score more when he is down low.  He is so tough and competitive.  Never gets tired.  Has to improve his on ball defense.  Allowed too many catch and shoot jumpers.  8 for 12 on sprint opportunities.  If I could catch alley-oops like that I would be 12 for 12 on those opportunities!

Michael Hurt - In the best shape of his life.  Had a lot of open looks that didn't fall but love that he is shooting them.  Still needs to improve his perimeter defense.  He is providing that veteran play we need on the court.  Does so many little things.  Love how he competes.  Never takes a play off.

Matz Stockman – Plus-18 when he was out there in 15 minutes!  I love seeing that.  9 points, 5 rebounds is terrific.  Can still do a better job offensive rebounding.  Still getting in game shape.  Very excited about what he is bringing.

Eric Curry - Rehab is going well.  He will be back and better than ever in no time.  I value his opinion off the court as it pertains to our team.  I often ask him what he thinks and promise I won't tell the team.  I am almost always lying when I tell him that.

Marcus Carr - Was denied his waiver by the NCAA.  We are currently appealing because we do not agree with their decision.  I am still confident Marcus should and will play this season.

Payton Willis - Has looked very good in practice.  Offensively extremely gifted.  Makes shots!

Hunt Conroy – Minus-1 when he was in the game!  Still on cloud nine with his New Orleans Saints.

Brady Rudrud - Really like the leadership he provides.

See everybody Monday night at the Barn.  We need a packed house!  I know there are limited seats still available.  Thanks to everyone who helped us raise over 120 thousand dollars for Coaches vs. Cancer.  We are making a difference in this fight against cancer.  I can't wait to continue to grow this event every year!
