Basten, Ferlic Earn All-Region Honors

PEORIA, Ill. – Redshirt sophomore Alec Basten and redshirt junior Evan Ferlic picked up NCAA All-Region honors on Friday morning after leading the University of Minnesota men's cross country program to a fifth-place finish at the 2018 NCAA Midwest Regional, hosted by Bradley at Newman Golf Course.
Behind top-25 finishes from Basten and Ferlic, the Gophers totaled 173 points, trailing Iowa State with 38, Bradley with 102, Tulsa with 107 and Oklahoma State with 124 in the 31-team field for the 10-kilometer race.
Basten, who has now led Minnesota in all five of his races this season, picked up his first career NCAA All-Region honor for finishing 20th on Friday with a time of 31:22.7 for the 10-kilomter competition. Likewise, Ferlic claimed his first career NCAA All-Region honor on Friday, finishing 24th at 31:30.3. The Maroon & Gold have now carried an NCAA All-Region selection for six-straight years as well as 21 of the last 22 seasons.
Minnesota rounded out its scoring with a 30th-place finish from Jack Manderscheid at 31:44.0, a 44th-place showing from Robert Wagner at 32:03.9 and a 55th-place performance from Joey Duerr at 32:10.8.
Additionally, Owen Hoeft ran 32:13.6 to place 58th and Shane Streich finished 93rd at 32:48.8.
