Bethany Hasz and Megan Hasz earned all-region honors to lead the Maroon & Gold.

PEORIA, Ill. -- The No. 23 University of Minnesota women's cross country team placed third at the NCAA Midwest Regional at Newman Golf Course on Friday morning. Bethany Hasz and Megan Hasz both recorded top-10 finishes to lead the Maroon & Gold and earned all-region honors for the third time in their careers.

"Today was a battle of a day," head coach Sarah Hopkins said. "It was a team day, and obviously every point mattered. They ran like that -- that every point mattered -- and that got us into third instead of fourth, and that's huge in terms of one, what was projected, and two, the national landscape."

B. Hasz led the Golden Gophers for the fifth time in as many races this season, placing eighth in 20:42.3 while M. Hasz finished second on the team in 10th overall in 20:44.3. Patty O'Brien was Minnesota's third runner for the fifth time this year, tying her career best with a time of 21:26.5 for 37th place overall. In their NCAA Midwest Regional debuts, Jaycie Thomsen (21:42.1) and Anastasia Korzenowski (21:45.2) rounded out the Gophers' top five in 63rd and 67th, respectively.

"I really was proud of the women from 5K in," Hopkins said. "They really put it on the line. Patty O'Brien had the race of the day today, from my eyes, and really closed the gap compared to what it has been on number two and three. She was a good middle stick in there that really kept things together. She got out and just stayed, and she did a wonderful job.

"And then Jaycie and Anastasia, obviously two freshmen being four and five was kind-of different than it was at the Big Ten meet, but those guys were really smart. They used the upperclassmen to help them position and then they really battled well. I thought Anastasia closed huge over the last 1K. She was passing a ton of people over the last 400 meters."

Iowa State won the team title with 79 points followed by runner-up Oklahoma State with 140 points. The Gophers scored 185 points for third place, and Illinois (203) and Northwestern (205) rounded out the top five.

NCAA regional competition wraps up Friday, and the Gophers will await the at-large team selections to learn their NCAA Championship fate. The at-large team and individual selections will be announced on Saturday during the inaugural NCAA Cross Country Selection Show at 4 p.m. CT on NCAA.com.

The top 31 teams in the nation will race at the 2018 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, Wis. The women's 6K will start at 10:45 a.m. CT and the men's 10K will begin at 11:45 a.m. CT.
