Kelly Pannek and Nicole Schammel were drafted when the NWHL held its draft for the 2019-20 season this week.

MINNEAPOLIS - Gopher seniors Kelly Pannek and Nicole Schammel were among the players selected in the 2018 National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) Draft this week.

Pannek was selected by the Minnesota Whitecaps as the team's first pick and the fourth overall pick of the draft. Meanwhile, Schammel was drafted by the Buffalo Beauts as the 23rd overall pick in the fifth round.

"We are proud of Kelly and Nicole," head coach Brad Frost said. "They have proven to be incredible players, and they will do great in the NWHL."

The two-day 2018 NWHL Draft saw six WCHA student-athletes drafted by four different teams. In addition to Pannek, the Minnesota Whitecaps also selected Wisconsin's Sophia Shaver (second round, ninth overall pick) and Ohio State's Lauren Boyle (third round, 14th overall pick). The Metropolitan Riveters nabbed the Badgers' Annie Pankowski with the first overall pick of the draft, and Wisconsin's Emily Clark (third round, 15th overall pick) went to the Boston Pride.

"We applaud all six WCHA women chosen in the 2018 NWHL Draft, along with their coaches and programs, for the incredible dedication to developing their games and becoming professional draft picks," said WCHA Vice President and Women's League Commissioner Katie Million. "We look forward to watching them excel in the second half of the 2018-19 college season and beyond!"

Pannek and Schammel join Lee Stecklein, Dani Cameranesi, Hannah Brandt, Amanda Leveille, Milica McMillen, and Maryanne Menefee to make up Minnesota's eight all-time NWHL draft picks. Brandt was the number two overall pick in 2015 and Stecklein was also selected second overall in 2016.

The Gophers return to action in 2019 by hosting the Minnesota Cup on Saturday, Jan. 5 and Sunday, Jan. 6 when the Maroon & Gold welcomes Minnesota State, St. Cloud State, and Minnesota Duluth to Ridder Arena for the four-team tournament.
