With the spring season kicking off February 2, Gopher Sports will be featuring Q&As with each Minnesota women's golfer. Up this week is senior Maggie Heggerston. Heggerston is a senior and captain this season from Pequot Lakes, Minn. She began her senior year at the Minnesota Invitational, and has competed in six tournaments each in every season prior. Last season she saw three lineup appearances, including the Big Ten Championships.
Gopher Sports: As one of two seniors, how has your role on the team changed?
Maggie Heggerston: Being one of the two seniors and the captain, I've gone from just being an upperclassman to someone who plays a larger role, which is exciting
GS: How do you feel the fall season went and what can you take from it heading into spring?
MH: Fall season was personally tough for me because I wasn't playing my best golf, but as for the team, it was a great season for developing and figuring out our new dynamic being that we're such a young team.
GS: What has been your favorite memory on the team so far?
MH: My favorite memories so far was probably being at Big Tens last spring. I was the first to finish the last round so I got to watch my team finish their last hole of the last round. Everyone was really hyped up, and we really ended on a great note, which was so fun to see. Not very often do you get to cheer your teammates on during tournament play, so it was so memorable being able to watch everyone finish their last hole.
GS: Now that you're four seasons in, reflecting on your time at Minnesota, what drove you to come here and what has been the best part?
MH: The biggest reason I came to Minnesota was because I was always a die hard Gopher fan growing up. I loved sports and I always wanted to be a student athlete for my home state.
GS: What advice would you give to your underclassman teammates?
MH: Advice that I would give my underclassmen is to just enjoy the journey. Sounds corny, but it goes by so fast, and I found myself worrying about the little things and forgetting to look at the big picture, which is how extraordinary it is to be a student athlete at a Big Ten program.
GS: What's one thing you'd like Gopher fans to know about you?
MH: One thing people might not know about me is that growing up I wanted to play basketball at the University of Minnesota! Unfortunately I did not have the talent to play basketball here, but I'd say things ended up alright for me!
