MINNEAPOLIS -- Junior goaltender Sydney Scobee chatted with the Voice of Gopher Women's Hockey Dan Hamann about beginning her college career at Vermont, transferring to the Gophers, and how the season is going so far.

SYDNEE SCOBEE INTERVIEW

Dan Hamman: Today my player guest is junior Sydney Scobee. She is a Minnetrista native and has come to Minnesota via Vermont. First of all Sydney, here's a belated welcome back to Minnesota. It was a two-year wait to come back. What was it like getting back to the state and suiting up for Minnesota and your first half of the season?

Sydney Scobee: It was really a neat experience. There's just something about putting on the 'M' jersey that is so surreal. Going out onto the ice and having a crowd is so fun. It's really fun to play here with this team and it's definitely nice to be home. I knew once I came back and played here with Vermont that this was where I potentially wanted to come back to.

DH: You mentioned your two years with Vermont. The recruiting process can take you on a weird journey. How did you end up at Vermont and what was the recruiting process like for you in high school?

SS: I ended up in Vermont, because I'm the baby of the family and my worst fear was that my mom would end up being at my college every single day, so I thought, "Okay, I need to go really far." My sister was going to the University of New England out in Maine, so I decided I would join her on the East Coast. I narrowed it down between a few schools and ended up at Vermont.

DH: Did you ever consider going the Division III route to stay close to home in Minnesota or was it always your dream to play Division I hockey?

SS: It was always my dream to go Division I. I wasn't opposed to looking at Division III schools, but I thought that I would just go for it, and if it didn't work out, I could always transfer. I'm really glad I did decide to go DI. I had a lot of great experiences at Vermont, and so far I'm having a great experience here. I'm really happy.

DH: Probably one of your fondest memories was coming back here last year and taking a game away from Minnesota on their home ice. I think a lot of Gopher fans were pretty shocked, and you nearly stole two if it wasn't for a big third period from the Maroon and Gold. How fond of a memory was that for you, taking away a game from a team you probably grew up rooting for?

SS: It was something else. Coming back here to Minnesota was so nice, and then actually beating the Gophers, I was like "No way." That was also one of the reasons I went away; I didn't want to play for the Gophers, I wanted to be able to beat them, just because they are always so good. When we actually beat them, I was so dead from the game, I just wanted to go to bed, but I was so stoked. It was amazing.

DH: So you're out at Vermont, and you probably didn't know that Minnesota was on the schedule. When they put them on the schedule, what was your initial reaction?

SS: I was so happy. I couldn't believe we were actually going to play Minnesota at Minnesota, not in Vermont. It was really cool to have my family at the games.

DH: Looking backwards now that you've transferred to Minnesota, do you think back at those games were a dress rehearsal or a tryout, so to speak? Do you think that's what enticed Coach Frost to take you in on a transfer?

SS: I mean, it definitely didn't hurt. I don't even know. I remember Frost asking me if I had a plastic board in the net after the second game. I had him as a national camp coach one year, so I knew him a little bit. I had Bethany as a coach in high school, so when I did get my release I reached out to them just because I knew them.

DH: Was it a slam-dunk that you knew you were going to come here or were there other schools in your choices?

SS: I definitely decided that I wanted to come back home, so I looked here first and reached out, just because it was close to home and I would have been able to have family come to the games. If it wasn't going to work out here, I'd definitely have tried to come back into the WCHA.

DH: How long did it take you to become acclimated to the team and the program, if at all? It seemed like a pretty seamless transition.

SS: I've played with a lot of the Minnesota girls already. Grace Zumwinkle was my teammate at Breck. They had their arms wide open, and they were ready for me. I remember when I committed, so many of the players texted me and were so happy, saying things like, "I don't know you yet, but I'm so happy you're coming." That meant the world to me. I played three-on-three with them this summer, so it was a really smooth transition.

DH: One of the things you're known for is your Twitter handle and the constant references to Scooby Doo. Obviously with a name like 'Scobee,' I could see the transition to Scooby. When did that first start? Did you watch Scooby Doo cartoons growing up?

SS: Well, I was actually terrified of Scooby Doo growing up, it just terrified me. I have two older siblings, so I feel like it just trickled down. My sister was always called "Scoobz" and now I'm called "Scoobz." Everyone just sees the name and goes, "Oh, like Scooby Doo!" I don't even know them and they'll call me that. I don't even respond to Sydney really.

DH: Which character do you think in that cartoon, if any, are you most like?

SS: I didn't really watch it that much, so I don't really know. I know one of them is like an airhead, so not that one, whoever that one is. Maybe Scooby Doo then.

DH: Wonderful, well it's great to have you back and we wish you continued success here.

SS: Thank you.

DH: Sydney Scobee, my guest today. This is Gopher Women's Hockey.
