ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- No. 12/15 Minnesota (12-1, 1-1 B1G) suffered its first loss of the season after a 76-60 setback at Michigan (10-4, 1-1) Monday afternoon at the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The loss ends Minnesota's season-opening win streak at 12 games, which tied for the second best start in program history and was tied for the third longest overall streak in program annals.
The 12-0 start for head coach Lindsay Whalen ties her with her former coach Pam Borton for the best start by a Gophers head coach in her first season. Borton started 12-0 in the 2002-03 campaign, Whalen's junior year.
Minnesota was led Monday by junior Taiye Bello. A native of Southfield, Mich., Bello scored a career-high 24 points on a perfect 9-of-9 shooting from the floor and 6-of-8 at the free throw line. She's one of five Gophers in program history to make at least nine field goals without missing, most recently done by Amanda Zahui B., who was a school record 11-of-11 against Purdue on Jan. 22, 2015.
Bello, who scored 18 of her 24 points in the second half, also had seven rebounds and two blocked shots.
Minnesota found itself down 15-13 after the first 10 minutes, its first time trailing after the first quarter this year. In the second quarter, a layup from senior Palma Kaposi put the Gophers ahead 20-19 less than three minutes into the frame. However, Michigan responded with a 21-2 run over the remainder of the first half to take control of the game and enter the locker room up 40-22.
Trailing 65-41, Minnesota opened the fourth quarter on a 9-1 run to close the deficit to 16 points. A layup from Bello with 4:14 to play found the Gophers down 69-55, but that would be as close they would get the rest of the way.
In addition to Bello's 24 points, senior Kenisha Bell and junior Jasmine Brunson also reached double figures. Bell had 12 points to go with seven rebounds and five assists, while Brunson notched 10 points with three rebounds and three assists.
Minnesota outshot Michigan 42.6 to 42.4 percent, but was done in by 23 turnovers, tied for the most it had committed this year. Those led to 26 Michigan points.
The Gophers are back in action Sunday at home against Illinois (8-4, 0-1 B1G) at 3 p.m. at Williams Arena. The game can be seen on BTN Plus.
