GopherSports.com asked the tough questions of Minnesota's nine rookies ahead of the 2019 spring season, beginning this week with infielder Zack Elliott.

Elliott arrives in Gold Country following a four-year career at Eden Prairie High School, where he helped lead John Buteyn's Eagles to a Class 4A State Championship in 2017, defeating Forest Lake and current Gophers teammate Zack Raabe. The 2018 Minnesota Mr. Baseball finalist played his club baseball for the highly rated Eden Prairie American Legion team. He ranked as the no. 3 shortstop and no. 14 overall player in the state of Minnesota according to Prep Baseball Report.

This fall, he slugged one double and scored a run in eight games during Minnesota's Steak 'n' Beans series. He and the Gophers continue work for the 2019 spring campaign as they look to repeat as Big Ten Champions. The Maroon & Gold open the season on Friday, Feb. 15 against Gonzaga at the Surprise Baseball Classic in Surprise, Arizona.

GS: Why did you choose to attend the University of Minnesota?
Elliott: "I chose the University of Minnesota because it has been a dream of mine ever since I was a little kid. They have an outstanding program that has great tradition with an amazing coaching staff. With several Big Ten championships and NCAA tournament appearances, I knew this was a program where I could compete and be successful year after year. I also was attracted to the strong academics of the University and the location of the school."

GS: When did you first start playing baseball and how did you first get involved in the sport?
"Ever since I was a little kid, my dad showed me the game."

GS: What would you say is your biggest strength in your sport? What is an area of improvement for yourself?
"I think I'm a really strong defensive player, and I think an improvement for myself would be hitting for power."

GS: What is your most memorable moment of playing your sport?
"Winning the state championship back in 2017, beating fellow [Gophers] teammate Zack Raabe."

GS: Who has been the biggest influence on your athletic career?
"My dad has always pushed me and has brought the best out of me in life and my athletic career."

GS: Did you play any other sports besides baseball growing up?
"I played football and basketball."

GS: What are you most looking forward to in this upcoming season?
"Traveling around the country playing the best competition."

GS: Do you have any advice for aspiring youth athletes?
"Never give up on your dream, no matter what anyone else says."
