MINNEAPOLIS - Titania Markland won the 800m at Vanderbilt's Music City Challenge and Karlie Place was pole vault runner-up at the Iowa State Classic as the No. 10 Golden Gopher women's track & field team wrapped up this weekend's competition on Saturday.
Music City Challenge
Titania Markland led the Gophers on day two of the Music City Challenge, winning the 800m run in a career-best 2:07.12 to move into seventh in Minnesota history. Val Larson also recorded an 800m PR of 2:10.60 to win the unseeded section and take 13th overall.
In the 60m hurdles, Emma Spagnola finished third in 8.36 seconds and Rachel Schow was fifth in a career-best 8.41 seconds, improving on her third-ranked time in Gophers history. Ashley Ramacher (8.73) and Ayesha Champagnie (8.75) finished 14th and 15th, respectively.
Emerald Egwim led the Gophers in the 400m, running 54.15 seconds for sixth place. Brieasha Hobbs posted a career-best time of 55.22 seconds for 14th place, improving on her ninth-ranked time in program history. Minnesota's 4x400m relay placed fifth in 3:40.79 as well.
In the field events, Lorean Murray placed 13th in the triple jump with a mark of 11.79m (38-08.25).
Iowa State Classic
Karlie Place and Lexi Kiefer both cleared 3.95m (12-11.50) to place second and third, respectively, in the pole vault and Madeline Strandemo ran a season-best 4:45.33 to place 10th in the mile to lead the Gophers on day two of the Iowa State Classic.
Minnesota's 4x400m relay team of Lindsey Smits, Sophia Anderson, Meleah Biermaier, and Abby Kohut-Jackson placed fifth in 3:52.18. In addition, Anderson (56.47) and Smits (56.91) also recorded career-best times in the open 400m while Biermaier posted a season-best time of 59.14 seconds.
The Gophers return home to host the Parents Day Invite at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse next Saturday, Feb. 17.
