COLUMBUS, Ohio - A pair of school records were broken Wednesday at the opening night of the 2018 Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. New times were written into the Minnesota record books following second place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay races.

In the 200-yard medley relay, the team of Tevyn Waddell, Lindsey Kozelsky, Danielle Nack and Zoe Avestruz captured an impressive runner-up finish in a time of 1:35.06 just behind Indiana who touched in at 1:34.16. The Gophers new school-record time gives them an automatic qualification for the event at the NCAA Championships.

The Gophers went on to earn another set of medals in the 800 free relay. D. Nack, Chantal Nack, Mackenzie Padington, and Avestruz recorded a runner-up finish in a time of 6:59.53. Minnesota was in a tight swim going in to the final 200 yards, but Avestruz turned up the heat swimming the final 200 yards in a time of 1:44.40 to give the Maroon and Gold a silver medal and an automatic qualification to the NCAA Championships.

The meet resumes tomorrow morning with preliminary heats of the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle and 1-meter diving beginning at 10 a.m. CT.
