Gophers Fall to Notre Dame, 3-0

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - No. 14 Minnesota (5-4) softball closed out the 2018 Big Ten/ACC Challenge Sunday morning with a loss to RV Notre Dame, 3-0. The Golden Gophers collected just one hit on the day while adding three base runners via the walk.
Danielle Parlich recorded the Gophers only hit on a two-out single to left field in the second inning.
Notre Dame was quick to tally a run on the scoreboard. Back-to-back singles and a base hit a batter later loaded the bases for the Irish in the third. Notre Dame's MK Bonamy scored taking advantage of a wild pitch by Minnesota starter Sydney Smith.
Minnesota went to the bullpen in the fourth as freshman Hannah Bailey made her Minnesota debut. The Irish jumped on the new arm scoring two runs on a bases clearing triple by Chelsea Purcell, both runs were unearned after a Golden Gopher fielding error the prior at bat.
Carlie Brandt made her season debut in the circle, relieving Bailey to start the fifth. Brandt closed out the game allowing just two hits while facing 11 batters in three innings of work.
Maddie Houlihan drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh in hopes of sparking another late rally, but Notre Dame starter Alexis Holloway was no match for the Minnesota bats.
Up Next
The Gophers travel to Orlando, Fla. February 23-25 for the D9 Citrus Classic at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Over the five day span Minnesota will take on Kentucky, South Alabama, Bradley, Lehigh and Duke.
