Gophers Take Home Silver in 200 Medley Relay

MINNEAPOLIS - No. 21 Minnesota men's swimming and diving team opened up the first night of Big Ten competition with a second place finish and a school record in the 200-yard medley relay. After the first day of competition, the Gophers sit in fourth place with 106 points.
The 200-yard medley relay squad of Matthew Thomas, Conner McHugh, Tuomas Pokkinen and Bowen Becker swam to a recording breaking performance. Their NCAA qualifying time of 1:24.25 earned them a silver medal finish and etched their names into the Minnesota record books. The Gophers relay squad broke the nine year old record in the event, last set in 2009.
Up next the Maroon and Gold had the 800-yard freestyle relay. The team of Timothy Sates, Kyle Van Niekerk, Nicholas Saulnier and Pokkinen posted a 5th place finish with a NCAA provisional time of 6:21.95.
The action picks back up tomorrow morning with preliminary heats of the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle and 1-meter diving starting at 12:15 p.m. CT.
