Gophers Roll BC in First Official Florida Outing

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - In its first official outing in Florida, the Gopher Baseball team dominated Boston College, 14-1, at North Charlotte Regional Park on Friday afternoon.
Junior Reggie Meyer (1-1) gave the Gophers 5.0 shutout innings, and a pair of freshmen combined to not allow a hit over the final four. Meanwhile, Minnesota (3-2) had 11 different players with at least one hit, 11 with at least one run scored, and 10 with at least one RBI.
The Gophers scored in six different innings, scraping across a run on an RBI groundout in the first, adding four runs in the second, three in the fifth, and four more in the eighth with single runs in the fourth and ninth. Cole McDevitt's fifth-inning home run produced the loudest pop for Minnesota, while Toby Hanson and Eduardo Estrada Jr. each added a double on the day. The Gophers hit six sacrifice flies on the day, including a pair by Micah Coffey.
Rookie Sam Thoresen bounced back from a shaky first outing in which he did not escape the first inning, tossing 3.0 innings against BC (2-2) while striking out four batters. He was followed up by fellow freshman Patrick Fredrickson, who struck out two in the ninth inning.
"I was much more relaxed and also much more focused on just doing what I can do and staying within myself," said Thoresen after the game. "After playing the Twins close yesterday, we really took it to Boston College today, and that was important for us to get off to the right start to the weekend."
The Maroon & Gold struck out nine batters on the day compared to just three for the Eagles. Jacob Stevens (1-1) could not get out of the second inning as he surrendered five runs on seven hits in just 1.1 innings to take the loss. BC used seven pitchers on the day.
QUOTABLE
"A lot of the guys said, 'Hey, it happens to everyone. It's something that we've all gone through.' [In the end,] it's not that big of a deal. It's just one game and you have to move on to the next one." - Sam Thoresen on advice he received after his last outing on how to take it one game at a time.
NOTABLE
Cole McDevitt hit his first home run since March 25, 2017 against Ohio State … a pair of redshirt freshmen, Gabe Knowles and Drew Hmielewski, each made their Gophers debut with a single in their first at-bat … Minnesota finished 11-13 in bringing home runners on third base in the game, including six sacrifice flies.
