Vavra Named Big Ten Player of the Week

MINNEAPOLIS - Junior infielder Terrin Vavra set the pace for the Gophers offense at the Snowbird Classic and received the Big Ten's Player of the Week award in recognition on Monday.
Vavra started at shortstop in all three games for Minnesota (5-2), as the Gophers out-scored Boston College, Chicago State, and Mount St. Mary's 46-11 in three games in Port Charlotte, Florida. The Menomonie, Wisconsin native batted .600 (9-for-15) while getting on base at a .625 clip and slugging .867 for the weekend. He scored eight runs, drove in six, added two triples, and stole two bases. His 13 hits so far in 2018 currently rank second in the Big Ten.
Vavra had three hits in each game, driving in a season and career-high three runs against the Mountaineers on Sunday. He also scored three runs in back-to-back games on Saturday against Chicago State and Sunday against Mount St. Mary's. Since finishing 0-of-4 in the season opener, Vavra has had hits in each of the Gophers' six games including multiple hits in four.
Vavra's Player of the Week honor is the first such for Minnesota since Micah Coffey earned the award back on May 8, 2017.

The Gophers will open a 10-game home stand at U.S. Bank Stadium on Tuesday when they host North Dakota State in the first of two border battles at the venue this week. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. in Minneapolis.
