MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - Gopher Hockey sophomore defenseman Ryan Lindgren will forego his final two years of eligibility at the University of Minnesota after signing an entry-level contract with the New York Rangers.

Lindgren will sign an amateur tryout contract (ATO) and finish out the season with the Rangers' American Hockey League affiliate -- the Hartford Wolf Pack.

Originally selected by the Boston Bruins in the second round (49th overall) of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, Lindgren was acquired by the Rangers at the trade deadline last month.

A native of Minneapolis, Minn., Lindgren skated in 67 career games for the Gophers, totaling 16 points (three goals, 13 assists) and 101 blocked shots. An alternate captain as a sophomore, Lindgren recorded career highs with nine points, two goals, seven assists and 51 blocked shots in 35 games, earning All-Big Ten Honorable Mention honors for his efforts.

The defenseman was also named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team after helping the Gophers win the 2016-17 Big Ten regular-season conference championship as Minnesota set an NCAA record with its sixth-straight conference crown.

While at Minnesota, Lindgren was twice named to U.S. Junior National Team, winning gold at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championships in Canada and bronze at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championships in Buffalo, N.Y.

Lindgren joins former Gopher teammate Vinni Lettieri and program alum Brady Skjei with the Rangers organization.
