Gophers Dominate with Nine Titles at UCLA

LOS ANGELES - For the second year in a row, the University of Minnesota men's track & field program will head back to campus with nine event titles after posting an impressive weekend at UCLA's Bob Larsen Distance Carnival and Jim Bush Legends Invitational.
The Gophers throwers continued a big West Coast weekend highlighted on Saturday by Jonathan Tharaldsen's pair of personal records. Tharaldsen won the shot put at 18.16 meters (59-07 ft.) and was the runner-up in the discus at 52.28 meters (171-06 ft.). Kieran McKeag, who won the hammer throw with a personal record on Friday, came in fourth in the shot put at 15.23 meters (49-11.75 ft.).
Minnesota also had a dominant performance in the 800 meters with five of the top six finishers including Dawson LaRance's win at 1:49.75. Chris Trotter came in third at 1:50.01, Lucas Trapp finished fourth at 1:50.25, Derek Wiebke ran 1:50.97 and Josh Tracy was sixth at 1:53.30.
Mason Roomes and Jonathan Johnson finished first and second, respectively, in the long jump on Saturday at Drake Stadium with Roomes hitting 7.18 meters (23-06.75 ft.) and Johnson clearing 6.89 meters (22-07.25 ft.).
The Gophers also listed the top-two finishers in both the 400-meter hurdles and the 1,500 meters on Saturday. Matthew Baker ran 52.40 to win the 400-meter hurdles behind a personal record and a time that ties for sixth all-time at Minnesota. Clayton Johnson was the runner-up at 53.76. Sam Carlson also had a personal record to win the 1,500 meters at 3:50.46 while Hunter Staack finished second at 3:54.16.
Jonathan Webb added a win in the 200 meters with his time of 21.28.
Additionally, Jackson Wellenstein (47.30) and Ben Psicihulis (47.95) finished second and third, respectively, in the 400 meters while Glen Harold finished second in the pole vault (5.05 meters, 16-06.75 ft.). Zach Nelson came in fourth in the 100 meters (10.79) while Eric Walker (14.75) and Jon Tollefson (15.31) were sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 110-meter hurdles.
Minnesota opened the weekend by winning three out of their four events on Friday night at UCLA's Bob Larsen Distance Carnival. Kieran McKeag claimed the hammer throw title (62.44 meters/204-10 ft.) while Shane Streich won the mile (4:04.35) and Nick Rink finished first in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (8:59.82).
The Maroon & Gold are back in action next weekend with three different meets. Minnesota will compete at Arizona State's Sun Angel Classic, UW-La Crosse's Ashton May Invitational and the Hamline Invite.
