Gophers Tie for 16th at The Goodwin

Minneapolis -- Continuing its climb up the leaderboard, the Minnesota men's golf team finished in a tie for 16th place at The Goodwin in Palo Alto, Calif., Saturday. Sophomore Thomas Longbella finished first on the team, tying for 42nd after a solid final round of competition.
After finishing round one in 22nd place and moving up to 18th place after round two, the Gophers played their strongest round in the third round, finishing with a score of 289 for the day and 872 overall. At 15 over par, the team finished in a tie with Oregon State, while Oklahoma won the tournament with a 25-under 828 after leading on the second day.
Like the team Longbella also played his strongest round on the third day, going two under par to take the lead on the team. He had five birdies in Saturday's round, enough to take him to +3 overall with a score of 216.
Senior Riley Johnson finished one shot behind Longbella after leading the Gophers in the second round. His two-over score of 73 in the final round brought him to +4 overall as he finished in a tie for 47th.
Junior Peter Jones finished in a tie for 78th in his first tournament of the spring. He had three birdies in his three-over round of 74.
Senior Rúnar Arnorsson finished in a tie for 88th with a nine-over score of 222, while freshman Angus Flanagan finished in a tie for 108th after a round of 78 on the final day.
Norman Xiong of Oregon won the individual competition with a 15-under score of 198.
The Gophers will be back in action for the final tournament of the regular season in two weeks at the Hawkeye Invitational, April 14-15.
