Minnesota Finishes Ninth at Tiger Invitational

Minneapolis -- The Minnesota men's golf team finished in ninth place at the Tiger Invitational, the first stroke play tournament of the spring, Tuesday in Opelika, Ala.
After a lengthy weather delay, the Golden Gophers went on to score a five-over 293 in the third round, bringing them to a team total of 877 (+13). Host-Auburn won the tournament, scoring a 25-under 839 over 36 holes. Behind Auburn, Georgia State scored 864, breaking even, while Mississippi State and Kennesaw State tied for third at one-over.
Freshman Angus Flanagan carded a 72 in the third round to break even for the day. He finished the tournament one over par, putting him in a tie for 23rd. He led the team in birdies over the course of the tournament, scoring 13 overall, including five in the final round.
Thomas Longbella tied for second on the team, finished four over par and tied for 35th overall. He finished the final 18 holes at three over, hitting five birdies of his own in the process. Riley Johnson also tied for 35th overall, finishing with a four-over 220.
Rúnar Arnórsson scored 72 in the final round to finish at even par on the day. He finished in a tied for 38th at five over par. Charlie Duensing finished the tournament in a tie for 74th, sitting at +13 after hitting four birdies in the last 18 holes.
This is the third year in a row that the Gophers have competed at the Tiger Invitational, and their ninth-place finish marks their best-ever performance at the tournament.
David Kocher of Maryland won the tournament after leading through 36 holes. He carded an 11-under 205.
The Gophers will be back in action for the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga. on March 16.
