COLLEGE STATION, Texas - University of Minnesota redshirt junior Kiley Sabin earned First Team All-America honors in the shot put as the Golden Gophers opened competition at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship hosted by Texas A&M Friday night.
Sabin used a season-best throw of 17.16m (56-03.75) on her second attempt to secure her fifth-place finish. She threw 16.32m (53-06.50) on her first attempt to begin the competition in eighth place before moving into fourth with her throw of 17.16m. She slipped one place to fifth in the fifth round.
Not only was Sabin's mark a season-best throw, but it was just 0.25 inches off her Minnesota program record and career-best throw of 17.17m (56-04.00) set at the 2017 Minnesota vs. Wisconsin Dual.
Sabin's All-America award marks the second of her career after she earned Second Team All-America honors with a 15th-place finish in the indoor shot put last season. Sabin entered this season's NCAA Championship ranked 15th in the nation with a previous season-best mark of 16.96m (55-07.75), surpassing her seed by 10 places with her fifth-place showing.
Ayesha Champagnie did not record a mark in the NCAA long jump competition, fouling all three jumps.
Action continues at the NCAA Indoor Championship on Saturday with Karlie Place competing in the pole vault at 4 p.m. CT and Kaitlyn Long, Agnes Esser, and Nayoka Clunis in the weight throw at 4:30 p.m. CT.
