Johnson Ties for 8th in Shortened Hawkeye Invitational

MINNEAPOLIS -- After inclement weather shortened the tournament, the University of Minnesota men's golf team tied for sixth at the Hawkeye Invitational. Senior Riley Johnson led the way as he tied for eighth, marking his first top 10 finish his career.
With the tournament shortened to just 36 holes, the Gophers played only one round on Saturday after Friday's opening round. The team finished the second round with a 29-over 317, scoring 602 overall. Drake also finished the tournament at 26 over par to tie for eighth. Iowa State won the tournament after leading after the first day, scoring a seven-over 583 for 36 holes.
Johnson continued playing well in the second round after tying for fifth through 18 holes. He went five-over in the second round, finishing at three over par and leading the Gophers to a tie for their best finish of the spring along with an eighth-place finish at the Big Ten Match Play event.
Johnson's tie for eighth breaks his previous career best finish of a tie for 12th, set earlier this year at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate.
Freshman Angus Flanagan finished just outside the top 20, tying for 21st. He went +8 in the second round, finishing with a six-over score of 150. Senior Rúnar Arnorsson finished in a tie for 26th, going seven over par.
Sophomore Thomas Longbella ended the second round at 10 over par to finish in a tie for 40th place. Senior Peter Jones ended in a tie for 68th, putting up three birdies in the second round.
Freshman Evan Long, competing as an individual, finished in a tie for 53rd.
Jeremy Gandon of Kansas State won the individual competition, finishing with an eight-under 136. He went two-under in the second round.
After a week off from competition, the Gophers will compete next in the Big Ten Championship, beginning on April 24 in Lutherville, Md.
