Gophers Begin Bryan Clay Heptathlon

AZUSA, Calif. - Four Golden Gophers began this week's competition slate by competing in day one of the heptathlon at the Bryan Clay Invitational Multi-Event on Wednesday on the campus of Azusa Pacific East in Azusa, Calif.

Through four events, Ayesha Champagnie (Kingston, Jamaica) is the top-scoring Gopher with 3,364 points, good for fifth place in Group 3. Ashley Ramacher (Eden Prairie, Minn.) is eighth in Group 3 with 3,304 points while Sofie Albrechtsen (Esbjerg, Denmark) has 3,064 points and is in 13th place in Group 3. Meanwhile, Kayla Nelson (Rush City, Minn.) has scored 2,938 points and is in second place in Group 1 through four events.

Highlighting day one of the heptathlon were two all-time top-10 marks. Ramacher cleared a career-best mark of 1.81m (5-11.25) in high jump to move into third in Minnesota history, and Champagnie ran a career-best time of 13.95 in the 100m hurdles to rank seventh among all-time Gophers.

Champagnie also ran a career-best time in the 200m, clocking a time of 24.75 seconds. Ramacher added two more PRs to her career-best showing in high jump, running 14.20 seconds in the 100m hurdles and posting a mark of 10.13m (33-03.00) in the shot put.

Nelson also posted two career-best marks, clearing 1.60m (5-03.00) in high jump and recording a throw of 10.87m (35-08.00) in shot put.

The Bryan Clay heptathlon wraps up Thursday. The Gophers will also compete at the Bryan Clay Invitational, Mt. SAC Relays, Pacific Coast Intercollegiate, and Beach Invitational in California this week.
