Minnesota Picks Up Three Wins at Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. - Three Gophers picked up their first wins of the outdoor campaign as the University of Minnesota men's track & field program closed out the weekend at Stanford's Cardinal Classic.

Representing the Maroon & Gold at the top of the podium at Cobb Track & Angell Field were Jonathan Webb in the 400 meters, Eric Walker in the 110-meter hurdles and Ryan Lockard in the high jump.

Webb won the 400 meter crown behind a personal record of 46.87 - a mark that now ranks eighth all time at the University of Minnesota. With Saturday's performance, Webb now ranks among the top-10 in program history in six different events - the outdoor 400 meters, the outdoor 4x100 meter relay (school record), the outdoor 4x400 meter relay, the indoor 60 meter dash, the indoor 200 meters and the indoor 4x400 meter relay. Jackson Wellenstein came in third on Saturday at 46.91 while Ben Psicihulis was fifth at 47.48.

Walker added a personal record of his own to pick up the win in the 110-meter hurdles. His winning time came in at 14.36 followed by Jon Tollefson in third at 14.68.

Lockard picked up his first title during the 2018 outdoor season with a win in the high jump at 2.08 meters (6-09.75 ft.).

In addition to three event titles, the Gophers also recorded three runner-up showings at the Cardinal Classic. Walker and Tollefson were joined by Zach Nelson and Matthew Baker in the 4x100 meter that finished second at 40.95 - less than a second off the winning time. Sammie Houston finished second in the triple jump at 14.93 meters (48-11.75 ft.) while Jonathan Tharaldsen came in second in the discus throw at 51.38 meters (168-07 ft.). Tharaldsen also recorded a personal record of 18.22 meters (59-09.50 ft.) to finish fourth in the shot put while Kieran McKeag added an outdoor personal record of his own to finish seventh at 16.28 meters (53-05.00 ft.).

The Minnesota 4x400 meter relay team closed out the night with a third-place performance as Dawson LaRance, Ben Psicihulis, Clayton Johnson and Josh Tracy ran 3:11.41.

Meanwhile, Nelson also added a fourth-place finish in the 100-meters at 10.66 - his second fastest time of the year. Jack Manderscheid finished fifth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at 9:07.30 while Nick Rink was ninth at 9:23.36 and Alex Plasencia was 13th at 9:40.60.

Derek Wiebke and Shane Streich finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the Invite Section of the 1,500 meters. Wiebke clocked a 3:45.71 while Streich came through at 3:46.00. Owen Hoeft finished fifth in Section Two at 3:48.90 followed by Sam Carlson in eighth at 3:51.05.
