Minnesota Earns Six Greco Qualifiers at U.S. Open

It was a successful day for Minnesota wrestlers on the second day of the 2018 Marine Corps U.S. Open in Las Vegas on Thursday evening. Minnesota guaranteed six Greco-Roman wrestlers to make the 2018 World Team Trials Challenge Tournament held on May 18.
Two University of Minnesota alumni were able to secure a spot at the Challenge Tournament next month. Pat Smith along with Alec Ortiz both finished high enough after day one to secure at least a top seven finish in order to qualify.
Smith, who last wrestled for the Golden Gophers in 2015, secured another spot in the Challenge Tournament where he is no stranger. Smith was a U.S. World Team Trials Champion in 2017, and is a three-time Pan American champion (2015-17). He has been a part of the U.S. National Team four times (2014-18).
Smith was able to finish day one with a perfect 4-0 record, running through his competition by allowing just three points in four matches. Smith will wrestle RaVaughn Perkins in the finals tomorrow morning.
Fellow alumnus Alec Ortiz was right behind Smith in qualifying for the May event. Cody Pack, who Ortiz could eventually face again tomorrow in a potential third-place bout, knocked out Ortiz in his first match of the day. Ortiz finished the day by ripping off four straight victories to earn himself a spot in the 2018 Challenge Tournament, scoring seemingly at will by putting up 38 points in four matches. Ortiz last wrestled in a Maroon and Gold singlet in 2014.
Other notable Minnesota wrestlers to qualify for the Challenge Tournament next month were Joe Rau and Barrett Stanghill who made the finals in 87-kilograms and 82-kilograms respectively. Both Rau and Stanghill represented the Minnesota Storm in Las Vegas.
Other Minnesota wrestlers to qualify were Richard Carlson and Donny Longendyke who both secured at least a top-six finish to earn themselves a Challenge Tournament spot.
Finally, Malcolm Allen will have to win his only match tomorrow when he takes on Conor Karwath in the seventh place match of 130-kilograms to earn himself a spot next month.
