Long Ball Leads Gophers Past Purdue, 7-0

Final Stats

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Five hits and five home runs aided a perfect start for the Gophers as they collected their fourth-consecutive conference sweep. With all nine starters reaching base, Minnesota (32-14, 15-3 Big Ten) recorded their fourth-straight shutout defeating Purdue (13-39, 4-15 Big Ten) in the series finale, 7-0.

"It was a great way to start the game with back-to-back solo [home runs] and then keep attacking," said head coach Jamie Trachsel. "I loved that we also tacked on one more in the seventh to score in multiple innings throughout the game. We defended well behind Carlie Brandt and she got better as the game went out. Three shutouts in a weekend is tough no matter who you are playing."

In a new spot of the lineup, Kendyl Lindeman wasted no time putting Minnesota on the scoreboard as the leadoff hitter. Four pitches into the game, the sophomore from Ankeny, Iowa belted her 18th home run of the season to dead center as she sits fourth all-time on the Minnesota career list. One batter later, MaKenna Partain took full advantage of a full count matching Lindaman's home run with one of her own to the exact same spot over the center field wall.

A Purdue pitching change early did not phase the Gophers' lineup at all. The fourth inning slug fest left the 611 fans at Bittinger Stadium on Purdue's senior day stunned at the hot Minnesota bats. Senior Sydney Dwyer started the party with a solo shot to left field before Dani Wagner two pitches later gave the Gophers a 4-0 lead on a solo shot of her own. Two was not enough in the inning as Danielle Parlich gave the Gophers back-to-back-to-back jacks on a shot over the right field wall. The fifth home run of the game was the most by the Gophers in a single game this season and is just the seventh time it has been done in program history.

Sophomore Carlie Brandt, making her sixth start of the year, retired nine of the first 10 Boilermakers she faced. Allowing just two hits in her five innings of work, Brandt improved to 6-2 on the year.

Minnesota added the one more in the seventh as Maddie Houlihan singled up the middle to score the Gophers' seventh run. Crossing the plate was Partain after she doubled to lead off the final frame.

Sydney Smith made an appearance out of the bullpen tossing two scoreless innings of relief. Smith allowed one hit and struck out four of the eight batters faced.
