MINNEAPOLIS - Redshirt senior Nicolle Murphy has been selected as this week's Big Ten Conference Field Athlete of the Week after winning the javelin title at the Ole Miss Classic last weekend.
Murphy won one of six titles for the Golden Gopher women's track & field team at the Ole Miss Classic, using her second-best throw of her career at 56.17m (184-03) to top the javelin field. Murphy dominated the competition, recording the top four throws and winning the competition by more than 10 meters ahead of teammate Ayesha Champagnie, the runner up with a throw of 45.47m.
Murphy's event crown marked her second in as many competitions this outdoor season after she also took home top honors at the University of Houston Cougar Spring Break Invite with a throw of 52.00m (170-07).
The Arkansas City, Kan., native now ranks first in the Big Ten and third in the nation in the javelin this season with her mark from the Ole Miss Classic. Her throw of 56.17m also marks the second best performance of her career, only shy of her career-best throw of 56.35m (184-10) set at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials where she finished fifth.
Murphy is the third Gopher to earn B1G weekly accolades this season after Kiley Sabin (Jan. 25) and Kaitlyn Long (Jan. 17) were both honored as Field Athletes of the Week during the indoor season.
The Gophers are back in action at the Baylor Invitational in Waco, Texas this Saturday.
