WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Weather continues to affect the Gopher Baseball team this week as its Big Ten series opener with Penn State was suspended after five innings due to cold temperatures at Purdue's Alexander Field.
Minnesota (18-10, 2-1 Big Ten) trailed Penn State (7-15, 1-5 Big Ten) by a 5-4 score as the two teams broke the scoreboard open in the fourth and fifth innings.
The two pitching staffs labored through the first five innings, combining for 11 walks and two hit batters so far in the game, the Gophers broke through on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth, making Justin Hagenman pay for walking the bases loaded as they scored a run on a wild pitch and then tacked on two more on a single off the bat of Alex Boxwell, who celebrated his birthday on the day.
Penn State took advantage of three walks by the Gophers pitching staff in the fifth, tying the game ahead of a two-run single by Joe Weisenseel to give the Nittany Lions the lead. A pair of defensive miscues by PSU brought Ben Mezzenga in to score as Minnesota pulled within a run in the bottom of the inning before the game was suspended due to cold before the first pitch of the sixth inning.
The game will resume in the top of the sixth Saturday at 1 p.m. ET ahead of the teams' scheduled game two at Alexander Field.
