Gophers Remain Atop B1G Standings

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Ashley Ramacher, Kiley Sabin, and Madeline Strandemo earned runner-up finishes to lead the No. 10 Golden Gopher women's track & field team on day two of the Big Ten Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship at Indiana's Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex on Saturday.

Ramacher (high jump), Sabin (shot put), and Strandemo (3,000m steeplechase) combined for 24 points for the Gophers in the team race as Minnesota remained atop the team standings through nine events scored at the end of day two.

The Gophers combined for 38 points on the second day of B1G competition, posting a two-day total of 85 points to lead the 13-team B1G field. Wisconsin (39), Michigan (35), Iowa (34), and Indiana (34) round out the top five teams heading into the third and final day on Sunday.

Ramacher and Heta Tuuri both earned top-three finishes for the Maroon & Gold in high jump as the duo each cleared a career-best 1.82m (5-11.50) to finish second and third, respectively. Ramacher cleared 1.66m, 1.71m, and 1.76m on her first attempts at each height before needing all three attempts to make 1.79m; she then cleared 1.82m on her first attempt to secure second place.

Meanwhile, Tuuri remained perfect through 1.79m before making 1.82m on her third bar. Ramacher and Tuuri are now tied for third among all-time Gopher high jumpers outdoors and secured a combined 14 B1G points for Minnesota.

Two Gophers also scored points in the shot put. Behind Sabin's runner-up throw of 16.60m (54-05.50), Nayoka Clunis finished seventh with a throw of 15.92m (52-02.75). Shay Nielsen advanced to finals and placed ninth at 15.69m (51-05.75).

Saturday's action concluded with the 3,000m steeplechase where Strandemo finished as B1G runner-up in 10:01.69. She was in third place after the first lap before moving into second place on her second lap and remained in the second position through the duration of the race as Michigan's Claire Borchers won in 9:58.36.

Fellow Gophers Elyse Prescott and Carissa Dock raced in the first heat of the 3,000m steeplechase with Prescott winning the heat in a career-best 10:44.86 for 14th place overall and Dock making her Big Ten debut in 20th place in 11:01.71.

Saturday's event finals also saw Lorean Murray compete in long jump where she recorded a mark of 5.74m (18-10.00), just shy of her season-best mark of 5.79m, to place 18th.

B1G Heptathlon

The B1G heptathlon came to a close on Saturday, and Ayesha Champagnie finished third with a career-best score of 5,821 points. Along with her bronze medal, Chamapgnie picked up six points for the Maroon & Gold in the team standings. She used top-eight finishes in all three day-two events to wrap up the event with a podium finish.

Champagnie's best event on day two of the heptathlon was javelin, which she won with a career-best throw of 49.53m (162-06); her mark gained her 851 points in the event and moved her into 10th among all-time Gophers in the javelin. Day two also saw Champagnie finish seventh in the heptathlon long jump at 5.63m (18-05.75) and take eighth in the heptathlon 800m with a career-best time of 2:26.50.

Day Two Preliminary Heats

Emerald Egwim and Titania Markland both won their heats to advance to Sunday's 400m final. Egwim ran the top preliminary time, a career-best 51.82 seconds, while Markland clocked the third-best preliminary time at 52.05 seconds, also a career-best time. Sophia Anderson placed 23rd in 56.39 seconds as well.

Two Gophers also moved on to Sunday's final in the 100m hurdles as Emma Spagnola automatically advanced as the winner of her heat in 13.23 seconds, and Rachel Schow moved on based on time with a preliminary time of 13.65 seconds.

Val Larson and Paige Peschel both recorded career-best times in the 800m preliminary heats. Larson placed 11th overall in 2:09.20 while Peschel was close behind in 2:09.86 for 13th place.

The B1G Championship concludes on Sunday with Minnesota set to compete in the triple jump, discus, 4x100m relay, 1500m, 100m hurdles, 400m, 400m hurdles, 5,000m, and 4x400m relay.
