Strandemo, Spagnola Set for USA Championship

MINNEAPOLIS -- Two of the newest University of Minnesota women's track & field alumnae are scheduled to compete at the 2018 USATF Senior Outdoor Championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa, this week.
Madeline Strandemo is set to race in the 3,000m steeplechase while Emma Spagnola will compete in the 400m hurdles. Action gets underway on Thursday and continues through Sunday. Fellow Gopher alum Nicolle Murphy qualified to compete in the javelin at the meet but scratched from the competition.
Gophers at the USATF Senior Championships
Strandemo's time of 9:51.49 ranks 12th among the 25 declared entries for the 3,000m steeplechase. She enters the meet after wrapping up her Gophers career as Big Ten runner-up in the 3,000m steeplechase and improving on her own Minnesota program record in the event this year. She also made her second NCAA Championship appearance in the 3,000m steeplechase and placed 17th.
Meanwhile, Spagnola is set to race the 400m hurdles this week. With a time of 56.51 seconds, she is tied for eighth of the 13 declared entries. Spagnola capped her her Gophers career as a First Team All-American after placing seventh in the 400m hurdles at the NCAA Championship.
Both Gophers are making their debuts at the USATF Senior Championship. Spagnola previously competed at the 2015 USATF Junior Championships, placing sixth in the 100m hurdles. She was a four-time USATF Junior Olympic All-American before beginning her Gopher career as well.
