Gophers Summer Update (June 26)

The Gopher Baseball team is represented across the country this summer with players competing in each of the top collegiate leagues. Follow along with this bi-weekly update to learn about how the Gophers are performing this summer.

Northwoods League
Joshua Culliver (Waterloo Bucks) - Stats
Culliver has made five appearances out of the Bucks bullpen yet this season, joining Waterloo following the Gophers' appearance in the NCAA Tournament. He tossed a hitless inning against Mankato in his debut and has allowed one or zero earned runs in three appearances so far this year. Suffering the defeat against St. Cloud, he did strike out two in 2.1 innings of work.

Ryan Duffy (Mankato MoonDogs) - Stats
Duffy has made three appearances out of the bullpen for Mankato yet this season, coincidentally each against Waterloo. After allowing earned runs in each of his first two appearances, he came back with a hitless inning last time out.

Drew Hmielewski (Eau Claire Express) - Stats
Hmielewski has continued as a two-way player for the express, cracking the line-up in three games so far this season and taking the mound once. On Monday night, he went 2-for-5 with a triple and three RBIs at Duluth. He took the hill against Mankato on June 1, allowing two hits while striking out two in one inning.

Bubba Horton (Fond du Lac Dock Spiders) - Stats
Horton has impressed in three appearances out of the Dock Spiders bullpen, allowing just one run in 5.2 innings of work. He picked up the win with 2.0 hitless innings against Wisconsin on June 20, and struck out three in 2.2 innings of work last time out at Kenosha.

Danny Kapala (Waterloo Bucks) - Stats
Kapala returned to the Bucks after coming on late in the season last summer. He has made three starts for Waterloo, striking out 13 in 13 innings of work. Luck has not been on his side as the lefty is 0-3 on the season despite allowing just three earned runs in his first appearances. In his season debut on June 8 against La Crosse, he struck out eight of the 11 batters he faced in 3.0 shutout innings of work.

Sam Thoresen (Waterloo Bucks) - Stats
Thoresen has made three appearances out of the Bucks bullpen since joining the team earlier this month. He allowed two hits and a run in his debut, but has not allowed a hit in 3.1 innings since. Last time out, he struck out five in 2.1 hitless innings at Mankato.

Jack Wassel (Fond du Lac Dock Spiders) - Stats
Wassel joined the Dock Spiders halfway through the month with hits in four of his six games this season. He has drawn seven walks compared to just five strikeouts in 25 plate appearances, and last time out, doubled home a run and scored against Kalamazoo.

Eli Wilson (Willmar Stingers) - Stats
Wilson has cracked the line-up in three games for the Stingers after making his second-straight trip to Waterloo. He went 1-for-4 in each of his first two games, driving in a run and scoring a pair of runs.

Cape Cod League
Brett Schulze (Hyannis Harbor Hawks) - Stats
Schulze joined Hyannis earlier this month. He picked up a save in his season debut, securing the final out of a 6-5 win against Brewster. He followed that up, suffering a defeat in 3.0 innings against Cotuit in his second appearance and then went 2.0 scoreless innings, striking out three while allowing just one hit against Orleans in his last appearance.

Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League
Easton Bertrand (Saugerties Stallions) - Stats
Bertrand is currently on a three-game hitting streak. He is off to a hot start through 10 games with three home runs and two doubles, driving in eight runs while hitting .317/.378/.585 on the young season. His best game of the year saw him go 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, two RBIs, and two runs against Oneonta back on June 11.

Jacob Hitz (Saugerties Stallions) - Stats
Hitz has hits in four of his seven games cracking the line-up as a utility player for Saugerties. Last time out, he doubled and scored a pair of runs against Watertown on June 22. He has scored three runs this season but has to drive in a run in limited playing time.

New England Collegiate League
Riley Smith (Upper Valley Night Hawks) - Stats
Smith has played in seven games for the Night Hawks since arriving in New England. He recently snapped a three-game hitting streak, highlighted by a 2-RBI game against Valley on June 20, going 1-for-2 while also adding a walk, a sacrifice fly, a stolen base, and a run scored.

Expedition League
Gabe Knowles (Badlands Big Sticks) - Stats
Knowles started his summer season with a nine-game hitting streak and has gone hitless in just three of his 19 games so far this season. He is batting .390 for the young season (30-for-77) with three doubles, a triple, and two home runs. He has driven in 13 runs and scored 16 times. On Tuesday, he was named to the Expedition League's inaugural All-Star Game.

USA Baseball
Max Meyer (Collegiate National Team) - Stats
The Gophers closer will compete alongside the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team this weekend as they take on the Chinese Taipei in the 18th International Friendship Series between the two teams. The series will be June 28 – July 2 in North Carolina.
