KINGSTON, Jamaica – Nayoka Clunis won the Jamaican national title in hammer throw to lead the Maroon & Gold representatives as University of Minnesota alumna Titania Markland and current Gophers Clunis, Ayesha Champagnie, and Shanique Wright competed at the 2018 Jamaica National Senior Championships over the weekend at National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica.

Clunis recorded a winning throw of 57.83m to secure the hammer throw national title. She also finished third in shot put (15.48m) and took sixth in discus (49.47m). Clunis improved upon her finishes in all three events a year ago when she placed third in hammer, fourth in shot put, and 10th in discus at the national meet.

Champagnie finished as national runner-up in javelin with a career-best throw of 49.55m, improving on her previous career-best mark of 49.53m (162-06) set during the 2018 collegiate season.

Wright rounded out the Gophers representatives in the field events, placing fourth in triple jump with a mark of 12.49m. Previously, she finished as triple jump runner-up at the 2016 Jamaica National Junior Championships.

Markland posted a 10th-place finish in the 400m, clocking a time of 52.87 seconds. A year ago, Markland took fifth in the 800m (2:06.47) at the Jamaica National Senior Championships. The 2016 event saw Markland place 14th in the 400m.

The quartet joined Gopher alumnae Emma Spagnola and Madeline Strandemo in action over the weekend as the duo competed at the 2018 USA Outdoor Track & Field Senior Championships. Spagnola placed 11th in the 400m hurdles while Strandemo took 17th in the 3,000m steeplechase.
