The Minnesota Golf Association hosted the annual Women's Match Play Championship at Faribault Golf Club this week, and there was a distinctive Maroon and Gold flair to the tournament. Three of the final eight golfers in the championship flight were current Gophers.
Redshirt sophomore Christine Portillo had the longest run in the tournament, falling to eventual runner-up Olivia Herrick in extra holes on Tuesday. Portillo had advanced to the round of eight with a pair of victories, 1-up over Madeline Messin and 4 & 2 over Stephanie Herzog.
Both senior Maggie Heggerston and sophomore Grace Kellar each won their opening match. Heggerston topped Kendall Olsen, 3 & 2, before falling to eventual champion Taylor Ledwein, 2-up, in the second round. Kellar topped Sophie Hill, 2 & 1, before falling to Haley Tollette by the same margin.
