ST. LOUIS – Just 24 hours after learning he’d be recalled from AAA New Orleans, Ben Meyer became the 36th former Gopher Baseball player to reach the Major Leagues when he made his debut for the Miami Marlins on Thursday afternoon.

Meyer entered with the Fish trailing 4-1 and a runner on first base in the seventh inning. He got some help from his defense when Lewis Brinson crashed into the wall to catch a line drive off the bat of Marcell Ozuna, but finished with a scoreless inning on 11 pitches. Despite Meyer’s best efforts, the Marlins could not come back to get him the victory and went on to fall by the same score. Meyer is the second former Gopher to make his MLB debut this season after D.J. Snelten cracked the big leagues with the San Francisco Giants. Snelten has since been claimed by the Baltimore Orioles organization. Ben was not the only Meyer to receive MLB news this week as his brother, current Gophers ace Reggie Meyer, was selected in the 38th round of the MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers on Wednesday. Ben was a 29th round pick of the Marlins back in 2015. The younger Meyer and the Gophers will take on Oregon State in the team’s first ever Super Regional series this weekend in Corvallis, Oregon. First pitch is set for Friday at 2 p.m. PT/ 4 p.m. CT.
