Champagnie Opens NCAA Heptathlon

EUGENE, Ore. -- University of Minnesota junior Ayesha Champagnie made her NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship debut by competing in the first four events of the heptathlon on Friday at Hayward Field. Champagnie is in 13th place with 3,409 points with three heptathlon events yet to be contested on Saturday.
Champagnie's best finish of the day was a third-place showing in the heptathlon shot put with a mark of 13.59m (44-07.00). She ran 14.03 seconds for the 100m hurdles to place 17th and took 21st in high jump by clearing 1.63m (5-04.25). The Kingston, Jamaica, native placed 13th in the heptathlon 200m with a time of 24.89 seconds to wrap up day one of the heptathlon.
The NCAA women's competition began on Thursday as Minnesota was led by Temi Ogunrinde's ninth-place finish in hammer throw and Emerald Egwim's 12th-place showing in the 400m. Fellow Gophers Nicolle Murphy (javelin), Rachel Schow (4x400m relay), Titania Markland (4x400m relay), Val Larson (4x400m relay), and Nayoka Clunis (hammer throw) joined Ogunrinde and Egwim in securing Second Team All-America awards.
NCAA Championship competition concludes on Saturday. Champagnie wraps up the heptathlon with long jump at 1:30 p.m. CT, followed by javelin (2:45 p.m. CT) and the 800m (7:13 p.m. CT). In addition, Emma Spagnola races in the 400m hurdles final, Heta Tuuri and Ashley Ramacher compete in the high jump, and Agnes Esser competes in the discus to wrap up the 2018 collegiate season.
