MINNEAPOLIS – Four Gophers have been named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America Men's & Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Teams, selected by CoSIDA, in recognition of their performances in the classroom and in competition.

Representing the Maroon & Gold are Second Team honorees Derek Wiebke and Madeline Strandemo and Third Team selections Temi Ogunrinde and Kiley Sabin.

A native of Kasson, Minn., Wiebke closed out his collegiate career by being recognized as the 2018 Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient for Minnesota. He claimed the 2017 Big Ten indoor mile crown and later added First Team All-America accolades in the indoor distance medley relay along with two All-Big Ten selections. Minnesota's SAAC president, Wiebke was a CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team selection in 2017 before adding a Second Team accolade in 2018. A German, Scandinavian & Dutch major, Wiebke has also been named Academic All-Big Ten five times in his career.

A native of Fargo, N.D., Strandemo capped off a storied collegiate career with her second NCAA Championship berth in the 3,000m steeplechase this spring, placing 18th overall. Strandemo is a two-time 2018 All-Big Ten First Team honoree in track & field, finishing as runner-up in the mile indoors and the 3,000 meter steeplechase outdoors after winning both events in 2017. She also earned All-Midwest Region and First Team All-Big Ten accolades during the 2017 cross country season. Strandemo holds Minnesota's program record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase; among all-time Gophers, she also ranks second in the mile, third in the indoor 3,000m, and seventh in the outdoor 1,500m. She ranks third on Minnesota's all-time top-50 six-kilometer performers list in cross country and was a three-time NCAA Cross Country Championship competitor. Strandemo earned her first Academic All-America nod after securing her second Academic All-District award this spring. A USTFCCCA All-Academic selection, Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, and Academic All-Big Ten honoree, Strandemo graduated from the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management this spring with a double major in Marketing and Mandarin Chinese.

The back-to-back Big Ten champion in the hammer throw, Ogunrinde was named a Second Team All-American after placing ninth in the NCAA hammer throw this season. She defended her 2017 B1G title with another individual championship this season, setting a Big Ten Championship meet record with a throw of 66.97m (219-08) in hammer. Ogunrinde also improved on her own Minnesota program record with a personal-best mark of 67.45m (221-03) this season. The Cottage Grove, Minn., native won five hammer throw titles in 2018. Along with picking up her first Academic All-America award, Ogunrinde is a USTFCCCA All-Academic honoree and Academic All-Big Ten honoree; she completed her degree in Entrepreneurial Management at Minnesota's Carlson School of Management this spring.

Sabin, a native of Slinger, Wis., made her third overall and first outdoor NCAA Championship appearance this spring, placing 18th in the shot put. She capped the 2018 indoor season with a fifth-place showing in shot put at the NCAA Championship, earning First Team All-America accolades. Sabin then improved on her own Minnesota program record in the shot put during the 2018 outdoor season with a throw of 16.89m (55-05.00) at Louisville before repeating as Big Ten runner-up in the shot put at the B1G Outdoor Championship to pick up her second-straight All-Big Ten Second Team award. This year's award marks Sabin's first Academic All-America nod. A Physiology major, Sabin intends to become a physician's assistant.
