Gophers finish fifth on CGA National Academic top-ten list
The University of Minnesota finished fifth overall in the College Gymnastics Association (CGA) National Academic top-ten list with a combined grade point average of 3.330, the organization announced.
The Gophers improved one spot on the top-10 list from a year ago while bumping their GPA from a 3.280 to a 3.330.
Twelve Gophers earned All-American Scholar-Athlete honors, an improvement from 10 a season ago. Nine gymnasts notched All-American First Team Scholar-Athlete honors for earning over a 3.50 GPA while three picked up Second Team honors for earning over a 3.20 GPA.
Yaroslav Pochinka and Luke Aldrich are just two out of five student-athletes recognized by the CGA this year to have earned First Team honors in all four years of their eligibility.
"The 2018 squad really set the standard for success both academically and in the gym," head coach Mike Burns said. "It will be exciting to see how the 2019 team measures up to the legacy that these guys left."
Minnesota's 12 honorees is the most since it had 13 following the 2014 season.
Pochinka, Aldrich, Henry Meeker, Alex Wittenberg, Colton Dee, Ben Winkel, Justin Karstadt, Vitali Kan, and Joel Gagnon all received a spot on the First Team while Timmy Kutyla, Jack Kramer and Russell Johnson grabbed spots on the Second Team.
