Wilhite and Tapp Earn Gold at Pan Am Cup

University of Minnesota volleyball alums Sarah Wilhite and Paige Tapp helped the United States Women's National Team to a gold medal at the 2018 Pan American Cup. Trailing 0-2 in the championship match against host Dominican Republic, 24-26, 21-25, Team USA rallied to win the final three sets for the title, 25-21, 25-19, 15-8.

Team USA began its gold medal trek with a win on July 8 over Trinidad & Tobago. After a loss to Cuba on July 9, USA defeated the Puerto Rican team the next day. With pool play ending, the Americans defeated Columbia in the quarterfinals and defeated Canada in the semis on July 13.

Wilhite made a significant contribution during the Pan Am Cup. During the playoffs, she contributed four points in the quarterfinal win, 13 points in the win over Canada and 15 in the championship match.  In all, Wilhite posted 54 points and started in five of six matches for Team USA. Tapp saw action in two of the six matches for Team USA.

Wilhite and Tapp helped the Americans to their sixth Pan Am Cup in 17 attempts, and five wins in the past seven years. Team USA has now won gold in both its tournaments entered in 2018. With the help of another pair of Gopher alums, Tori Dixon and Lauren Gibbemeyer, USA won the inaugural FIVB Volleyball Nations League title.
