Take a look back at the Golden Gopher women's track & field team's historic 2018 season

MINNEAPOLIS – Look back at the University of Minnesota women's track & field team's historic 2018 indoor and outdoor seasons.

Gophers Take 12th in Program of the Year Race

Minnesota finished 12th in the nation in this year's NCAA Division I Women's Program of the Year standings presented by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The Gophers finished 19th at the 2017 NCAA Cross Country Championship last fall, returning to the national meet as a team following a one-year hiatus. The Maroon & Gold then placed 14th at the NCAA Indoor Championship and wrapped up the season by tying for 56th at the NCAA Outdoor Championship.

Gophers Sweep 2018 B1G Team Titles

Minnesota won both the indoor and outdoor Big Ten Conference team titles this season, securing the program's sixth and seventh overall B1G crowns and sweeping the two championships for the first time in program history.

The Gophers won the program's fourth indoor and sixth overall Big Ten title led by Kaitlyn Long's weight throw title and runner-up showings by Titania Markland in the 600m, Madeline Strandemo in the mile, and Karlie Place in pole vault. The Gophers scored 91.50 points in the team race for a convincing team victory to defeat runner-up Purdue by 11.50 points. The Boilermakers recorded 80 points for second place, followed by Ohio State and Indiana tied for third with 75 points apiece while Iowa (74 points) rounded out the top five B1G women's teams.

Outdoors, Minnesota won the program's third outdoor and seventh overall B1G crown. The Gophers were led by Big Ten champions Temi Ogunrinde (hammer throw) and Nicolle Murphy (javelin) and scored points in 15 of 21 possible events. Along with the two individual B1G titles, Minnesota earned runner-up finishes in five events: 4x100m relay (Rachel Schow, Titania Markland, Emma Spagnola, Emerald Egwim), triple jump (Shanique Wright), 3,000m steeplechase (Madeline Strandemo), shot put (Kiley Sabin), and high jump (Ashley Ramacher). The Maroon & Gold led the team race throughout the meet, including holding a 46-point lead after two days and nine events scored. The field narrowed the Gophers' lead on day three, but Minnesota never trailed. The final team standings saw the Gophers win by two points, edging runner-up Purdue 134-132, but the Gophers held an insurmountable 12-point lead going into the final event, the 4x400m relay.

2018 NCAA Outdoor Championship Rewind

Minnesota had a program-record 14 NCAA qualifiers at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Championship. Twelve Gophers totaled 13 All-America awards led by First Team All-American Emma Spagnola following her seventh-place finish in the 400m hurdles. Emerald Egwim earned two Second Team All-America awards in the 400m dash and 4x400m relay as well. In total, 12 Gophers collected Second Team All-America accolades. Ayesha Champagnie (heptathlon) and Temi Ogunrinde (hammer throw) both placed ninth in their respective events to earn the first All-America awards of their careers. Agnes Esser matched her highest NCAA finish of her career with an 11th-place showing in the discus. Along with her 12th-place showing in the 400m, Egwim joined Rachel Schow, Titania Markland, and Val Larson in finishing 14th in the 4x400m relay. Egwim wrapped up her Gopher career as a four-time All-American while Markland finished her career as a two-time All-American in the 4x400m relay. Schow and Larson both made their NCAA Championship debuts and earned their first All-America awards this season. High jumpers Heta Tuuri and Ashley Ramacher tied for 12th place to secure their first All-America honors. Tuuri improved on her finish at the 2016 NCAA Championship where she tied for 17th in high jump while Ramacher made her NCAA debut this spring. Nicolle Murphy placed 14th in javelin to secure the third All-America award of her career after placing fourth at the 2016 NCAA Championship and sixth at the 2015 NCAA Championship in her two previous NCAA berths. Nayoka Clunis rounded out Minnesota's Second Team All-Americans after her 15th-place showing in hammer throw. Spagnola (100m hurdles), Markland (400m), Kiley Sabin (shot put) and Madeline Strandemo (3,000m steeplechase) also received All-America honorable mention for their performances at the national championship.

2018 NCAA Indoor Championship Rewind

Five Gophers earned USTFCCCA All-America nods at the NCAA Indoor Championship to cap off the indoor season. NCAA weight throw champion Kaitlyn Long and Kiley Sabin, who placed fifth in the shot put, were named First-Team All-Americans while Agnes Esser, Karlie Place, and Nayoka Clunis earned Second-Team honors. Esser finished 11th in weight throw, Place was 12th in pole vault, and Clunis finished 16th in weight throw at the NCAA Championship. Ayesha Champagnie was recognized as honorable mention after competing in the long jump but fouling all three attempts.

Long Becomes Gophers' Second NCAA Champion

Kaitlyn Long won the weight throw to become the second national champion in University of Minnesota women's track & field history at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship. Long recorded a winning mark of 23.30m (76-05.50) on her sixth and final throw to take the lead after being in fifth place through three rounds of the competition. Long joins Minnesota alumnae Heather Dorniden, the 2006 indoor 800-meter champion, to make up the program's two national champions. A two-time NCAA Division II national champion, Long fouled her first two attempts and moved into fifth place with a throw of 22.15m (72-08.00) on her third throw, securing a place in the event final. She then threw 21.57m (70-09.25) and 21.82m (71-07.25) on her fourth and fifth throws, remaining in fifth place, before moving into the lead on her final attempt. Along with her distinction as national champion, Long was named a First Team All-American and the Big Ten Indoor Field Athlete of the Year as well.

Ramacher Named B1G Freshman of the Year

Redshirt freshman Ashley Ramacher was named the Big Ten Conference Outdoor Track & Field Freshman of the Year, becoming the sixth Gopher in program history, and first since 2006, to earn the award. Ramacher wrapped up her first season competing in uniform for the Gophers as a Second Team All-American and Second Team All-Big Ten honoree in high jump. She represented the Maroon & Gold at the NCAA Championship, tying for 12th in high jump at 1.73m (5-08.00). Ramacher finished as B1G high jump runner-up, helping Minnesota to the program's seventh overall and third outdoor conference title. The Eden Prairie, Minn., native cleared a career-best 1.82m (5-11.50) at the Big Ten meet to tie for third among all-time Gopher high jumpers.
