University of Minnesota alumna Kate Schipper is the fourth Gopher women's hockey alum to sign with the Minnesota Whitecaps
MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota alumna and two-time national champion Kate Schipper has signed with the National Women's Hockey League's Minnesota Whitecaps for the 2018-19 season, the NWHL announced this week. Schipper is the fourth Gopher alum to join the Whitecaps for the upcoming season and the sixth Minnesota alum to sign with an NWHL team for 2018-19.
"The All-Star Weekend in Saint Paul showed the strength of the women's hockey community and fan base we have in Minnesota, so I'm very excited for the opportunity to play a part in bringing professional women's hockey to the state," Schipper said in a statement issued by the NWHL. "I hope to establish the Whitecaps as a competitor in the NWHL while continuing to advance girls' hockey in Minnesota and across the U.S."
Schipper spent the 2017-18 season playing with the Whitecaps as well but will make her NWHL debut this season after the Whitecaps officially joined the league earlier this spring. Schipper was one of the Whitecaps' two representatives to take part in the 2018 NWHL All-Star Game, which was played in Saint Paul, Minn., last February.
In four years with the Gophers from 2013-14 to 2016-17, Schipper recorded 121 points with 41 goals and 80 assists in 157 games. She helped the Gophers to back-to-back national championships in 2015 and 2016 and served as an assistant captain as a senior.
The Whitecaps open the 2018-19 season at TRIA Rink in Saint Paul on Saturday, Oct. 6 and Sunday, Oct. 7 against the defending Isobel Cup champion Metropolitan Riveters, including fellow Gophers alum Amanda Kessel. The Whitecaps' roster includes 2018 Team USA Olympic gold medalists Hannah Brandt and Lee Stecklein, along with NWHL Goaltender of the Year Amanda Leveille.
