7/24/2018 12:28:00 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving

Eight Golden Gophers will travel to The Golden State to compete at the Phillips 66 National Championships this week in Irvine, California. The USA Swimming National Championships will serve as the selection meet for the 2018 Pan Pacific games coming up in August as well as for the 2019 FINA World Championship team that will take into account performances from both meets.

Seniors Bowen Becker and Chantal Nack lead Minnesota into the meet. Becker enters nationals after becoming an All-American and placing third at the 2018 NCAA Championships in the 50 freestyle. Additionally, Becker currently holds the Gopher long course records in the 50 and 100 free. Nack set a school record as part of the 800 free relay team that earned All-American honors at the NCAA Championships.

Alum Conner McHugh and junior Tevyn Waddell also hold long course records for Minnesota heading into the week. McHugh set the record in the 200 breast a year ago, touching in 2:12.47. Connor McHugh and freshman Max McHugh will each participate in the 200 breaststroke in Irvine. Waddell is set to race in the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke in California. Two events in which the South Dakota native already holds Gopher long course records for.

Matthew Thomas returns to California to compete in Irvine, originally from Hollister, CA. Thomas was a member of the 200 and 400 medley relay teams that placed second at the Big Ten Championships a season ago. Nick Saulnier and Lindsey Kozelsky will begin their National Championships on Thursday. Saulnier with a double swim competing in the 200 freestyle and 200 backstroke and Kozelsky in the 200 breaststroke.
