Gopher kicker named to preseason watch list for Lou Groza Award
University of Minnesota senior kicker Emmit Carpenter was named to the preseason watch list today for the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award. He was one of 30 kickers named to the list.
Carpenter, who was a named a semifinalist for the award in 2016, has made 36-of-44 career field goals and his 81.8 field goal conversion rate ranks first in program history and ranks second among active kickers with at least 35 field goals. His 36 career field goals rank him seventh in school history. He has made 22-of-29 field goals at TCF Bank Stadium, 13-of-14 on the road and 1-of-1 in neutral-site games. Carpenter is 30-of-38 on FieldTurf and is a perfect 6-of-6 on natural grass. In addition, he has made 74-of-75 career point-after attempts.
In 2017, he made 14-of-20 field goals and was a perfect 31-of-31 on point-after attempts. He led Minnesota with 73 points and was named All-Big Ten Honorable Mention.
In 2016, Carpenter was named Big Ten's Bakken-Andersen Kicker of the Year (first Gopher to be honored with this award), after making 22-of-24 field goals. He was named All-Big Ten First Team by the media and All-Big Ten Second Team by Big Ten coaches. Carpenter totaled 109 points, which tied Dan Nystrom (109 points in 2000) for most all-time by a Minnesota kicker. Carpenter's 109 points also ranks tied for second all-time with Nystrom for any Gopher behind Gary Russell (114 points in 2005) and he finished fifth in the Big Ten scoring race that season. Carpenter made his first nine field goals (tied for sixth longest streak in school history) to start the year and ended the season with 12 consecutive made field goals (fourth longest streak in school history). He was a perfect 10-of-10 on field goals from 40 yards or greater and was the only kicker in the nation - minimum of six kicks - to accomplish this feat (8-of-8 from 40-49 yards and 2-of-2 from 50-plus yards). His career long field goal of 53 yards came against Purdue.
He has also found success off the field, as he was named Academic All-Big Ten and CoSida Academic All-District in 2016 and 2017. He was also honored with the team's Tony Dungy Character and Community Service Award (great character on and off the field) in 2017.
Carpenter is a majoring in supply chain operations and is interning with Minneapolis-based Sleep Number this summer.
