Ogunrinde to Compete at African Championships

Gophers senior Temi Ogunrinde is set to compete for Team Nigeria at the 2018 African Athletics Championships this week.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Gophers senior Temi Ogunrinde is set to compete for Team Nigeria at the 2018 African Athletics Championships in Asaba, Delta State, Nigeria, this week. The competition begins Wednesday, Aug. 1 and concludes Sunday, Aug. 5.

Ogunrinde joins Queen Obisesan and Sofiat Omizi to make up Nigeria's hammer throwers as named by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) for the 21st African Athletics Championships. The women's hammer throw final is scheduled for Wednesday at 18:05 local time in Asaba.

Entering the competition, Ogunrinde is the top-ranked hammer thrower in Africa; she improved her career-best mark to 67.45m (221-03) during the 2018 outdoor track & field season. Ogunrinde repeated as the Big Ten Conference champion in hammer throw and earned Second Team All-America honors this season.

South Africa won the 2016 African Athletics Championship, followed by runner-up Kenya and Nigeria in third place.
