The pair of Gophers, both business and marketing education majors, spent three weeks in Florence before closing out their trip with a three-day visit to Rome.
MINNEAPOLIS – Over the course of the year, Gopher Hockey players balance a large list of time demands between school work, training and whatever else might come up over one of the longest seasons in college athletics. And when the season ends, there's no question that a nice break from the hectic schedule is in order.
That's exactly what soon-to-be seniors Tyler Sheehy and Eric Schierhorn planned out earlier this summer when they participated in a study abroad program in Italy through the University of Minnesota.
The pair of Gophers, both business and marketing education majors, spent three weeks in Florence before closing out their trip with a three-day visit to Rome.
We caught up with Sheehy and Schierhorn to chat about their adventure in Italy…
On the decision to study abroad in Florence…
Schierhorn: "Jack Glover, Ryan Collins, and Nick Lehr all did the same program the year before, and they talked about how much they loved it, how much they loved Florence, and I think Italy was a place that Ty and I had pegged that we really wanted to go see. we heard nothing but great things about Florence. We were pretty sure when we were looking at the options that this was what we wanted to do. After doing further research, we knew that this was the one."
Sheehy: "First and foremost, I had never been to Europe so Italy seemed like a pretty good idea. I know Eric (Schierhorn) has been there and he thought it was pretty cool. He told me how cool it was over in Europe and it was an opportunity I couldn't pass up. I thought it would be pretty cool to go study over there, and would be an opportunity that wouldn't present itself later in my future, so it was just a great spot for my study abroad program."
On a typical day in Florence…
Schierhorn: "You wake up around eight and we'd have class for maybe two hours, then you have lunch on your own and explore Florence and do whatever you want to do on your own. Then, we'd usually have a visit to one of the historic churches around town. We did a couple cooking classes, we had a couple class dinners. The days weren't really similar because we were doing something different every day, which was part of the fun."
Sheehy: "I think there was a bit of a culture change. Everyone there was super nice so being from Minnesota you're used to the reputation of everyone being nice, but everyone over there was too. I don't know if there was anything too crazy about the culture, there wasn't too much of a culture shock or anything, but overall, seeing how people act and seeing their strong religious beliefs was probably the biggest culture change for me."
On favorite things in Italy…
Schierhorn: "We traveled to Cinque Terre, which are five towns on the coast of Mediterranean, and it was so beautiful. You're right on the water, the towns are super cool, and all the buildings are pastel colors so it's just amazing."
Sheehy: "We got to visit a ton of different churches and museums, but I think the coolest place was when Eric and I went to Cinque Terre. It was a pretty cool beach, and I don't think I would probably have ever been there if it wasn't for the trip."
On the opportunity to study abroad at the University of Minnesota (Editor's note: recent Gopher Hockey alums have participated in trips to Germany, Italy and China)…
Schierhorn: "We definitely get excited. I've talked to every single one of those guys about their study abroad and they heavily encourage and would probably say you're stupid to not go abroad. After doing my abroad trip I would probably agree because it's a great trip to Europe while you're still in college and it's a requirement to graduate, so it's kind of like, 'why wouldn't you?' "
Sheehy: "When we were over there, the time really flew by and we had a great time. With our academic adviser really pushing people in our hockey program to go study abroad each year, allowing us to do this. I thought it was a great opportunity, and study abroad was something I really always wanted to do. I think with our program and our school allowing us to do this for three weeks was a really cool opportunity and a once-in-a-lifetime thing.
