Horton and Wassel Take Home Northwoods League Title

DULUTH, Minn. – A highly competitive Northwoods League Summer Collegiate World Series ended late Friday night as Fond du Lac edged out Duluth 4-3 in the decisive game three. Gopher Baseball's Jack Wassel scored the game-winning run in the seventh after being hit by a pitch, as he and fellow Minnesota teammate Bubba Horton celebrated a summer championship with the Dock Spiders, the third time in four seasons that a Gopher has helped hoist the league's title.
Wassel reached base twice in two games during the World Series, capping off an impressive campaign where he hit .317 for Fond du Lac, slugging seven doubles, 24 RBIs, and 32 runs scored in 44 games.
"I had a great time in Fond du Lac this summer," said Wassel. "The 'Fondy Faithful' were awesome every day, and I made relationships with a great group of guys that will last forever. The [Summer Collegiate World Series] win was the icing on the cake, and it was all worth it in the end.
Horton contributed far more than what the box scored could show for the Dock Spiders in the World Series. While Fond du Lac dropped game two 8-1 to Duluth, Horton provided 4.1 innings of work out of the bullpen, allowing just one earned run on three hits while striking out two, saving the rest of the staff for the rubber match. He capped off a season with he made 14 appearances with a 5.20 ERA, striking out 27 in 26.1 innings while finishing with a 1-1 record.
"The summer was an incredible experience both on and off the field," said Horton. "It was a summer I will not forget where I could play baseball every day and form new relationships with guys I would never have met if not for the Northwoods League. I was given a chance to improve my own game thanks to the help of head coach Zach Charbonneau [and] pitching coach Drew Tumbelty, who helped me on the mechanical side of my delivery."
In 2017, Jake Stevenson and Jackson Rose both pitched for the St. Cloud Rox in a title-winning effort, while Micah Coffey helped the Kenosha Kingfish to a Northwoods League championship in 2015. Wassel and Horton made it five Gophers in four seasons as they helped Dock Spiders secure the win this season. The 2016 Northwoods League champions, Wisconsin Rapids, also had a pair of Gophers compete for the team during the regular season, Jeff Fasching and Luke Pettersen.
With the summer season in the rear-view mirror, Wassel, Horton, and the rest of the Minnesota roster will rest up before the fall training season begins next month.
