ST. PAUL, MINN. – After a successful four-year collegiate career and tearing up the amateur baseball scene this summer, Gopher Baseball alum Alex Boxwell will get his first crack at the professional ranks as he joins the St. Paul Saints for the final stretch of the American Association season.
Â
The Coon Rapids native closed out his stay at Minnesota with one of his most successful seasons as the team's starting center fielder. Despite battling a hand injury early in the year, he finished the season with a .258 batting average, six home runs, 34 RBIs, and 32 runs scored in 50 games, capping it off by earning a spot on the NCAA Minneapolis Regional All-Tournament Team, driving in four runs with a home run and a double against UCLA in the Regional final.
Â
Boxwell finished his Maroon & Gold career as a .263 hitting in 163 games, including 132 starts. He drilled 15 home runs, drove in 70 runs, and crossed the plate 89 times. Harnessing the speed element to his game as a senior, he swiped a team-leading 21 bases to finish with 31 for his career. He spent two summer seasons with the Waterloo Bucks of the Northwoods League, participating in the Major League Dreams Showcase and racking up 108 hits in 101 games.
Â
Boxwell is the second recent Gophers alum to catch on with the Saints this season. Luke Pettersen played in nine games for St. Paul before opting to retire from baseball to focus on his full-time career as a realtor.
